and why is that?

I could make all the decisions for all the people.

I could replace priesthood, aristocracy and democracy alone..

It may even actually know better, there is certainly plenty of historical evidence. Unfortunately, true freedom also includes the freedom to be wrong. Even catastrophically wrong.

This is always balanced by the fact that in the long run, the truth will out.

Totally agree.

Except this "long run" statement.

In the long run we all dead...

reminds me of a quip from an evolutionary biologist, maybe that Scot, Haldane?

When considered within the framework of time, on average we are all dead.

A. Assume that global warming is a fact and that it is indeed caused by humans, fossil fuels, etc. In other words, the current state of rising temperatures is not a natural planetary phenomenon for this globe.

B. Assume -- as many scientists say -- that if we TERMINATED -- not just reduced -- all human contributory factors, as of today, then it would still take 10-15-20 years for the planet to stabilize, much less reverse this trend.

Okay, with those premises, then:

1. Who would be willing/able to immediately dump all vehicles powered by fossil fuels?

2. Who would be willing/able to turn off all air conditioners, which contribute further heat to the atmosphere directly as well as through fossil fuel power plants?

3. How many other "necessities" and "comforts" would people in developed nations be willing to give up to be able to eliminate fossil fuel power plants?

Now changing premise B to REDUCING instead of terminating:

1. Who would be willing/able to curtail driving by 25-50% in fossil fuel vehicles?

2. Who would be willing to set their A/C thermostats at 85 or even higher in the hot, humid summer months?

3. What else would you give up or cut back on?

I think it all needs to be controlled by a combination of tax policy and a large government program to change the power source of our planetary automotive fleet to nuclear power. If you tax the shit out of gas hogs, then it takes them out of the middle class income brackets. Those with fat incomes are welcome to continue to own them, and I think the ecology could tolerate vehicles of this type if they were weekend hobby thingies. The real problem is the massive amount of green house gases pumped into the atmosphere by the millions of commuter vehicles. We must get day to day transportation running on electric cars power nukes. We could have done it for what we have spent on the war in Iraq, and done more for Mideast peace in the process than we ever would with the fucking stupidity of the war.

The other issue is the massive amounts of pollution poured into the atmosphere by refineries and chemical plants. The rotten criminal bastards could capture the damn stuff in a pipe and refine it into solids like they do everything else. The cocksuckers need to be fucking arrested for what they are doing, planet wide. The current amounts of mercury and other heavy metals they pour into our air along with the greenhouse pollutions is a crime against humanity.

Who will pay the taxes you promote?

Why give my money to some fucking bureaucrat to misspend when I can misspend my money to my own advantage?
