Israel told her they "desire peace," which is a football field away from "we want to resume peace talks." One is an objective or goal, the other is a strategem. Pelosi is clearly unable to discern the distinction.
First of all, I don't understand why she felt she needed to say anything to anyone about what the persons she visited with in Israel told her. Or what the persons she met with in Syria told her.
I also don't know that Israel's words with her were not as she said they were, and that Bush's channels were exercised to split some hairs and make a case for Pelosi appearing to have got the message wrong. We will be able to see if that was the case when Bush doesn't approve selling the Saudis certain weapons or some other Israeli special interest is supported in the near future. I don't find the Israelis any more likely to live up to a private committment than, say, the Syrians or the Iranians. Way too many twists and turns along the road of working to achieve peace in the area, some even blatant contradictions of committments made when those committments become unpopular or inconvenient. If that was the case it was likely a long term poor choice.
But, the gist of your comments is correct. It was not Pelosi's charter to initiate a new foriegn policy thrust, even if she, like I, find Bush's methods so outlandishly childish and small minded that they are doing long term damage to America's international stature and credibility. It would have been much more meaningfull and effective to merely have some probing discussions and then shut the fuck up. Maybe bait a few small traps and schedule another set of discussions in the future to get to know the bastards in both countries better and check the traps. But to speak to the press about what either of these snakes said was just not called for - and while I don't think it has any bearing on much of anything of substance, it has generated a lot of negative press for her.
She should go read the Hippocratic Oath doctors have to swear to, and see if she can first in her actions as Speaker of the House, do no harm to that position as she tries to respond to the need to change our government's policies and strategies to implement those policies. Jim
