Well, Coming from Northern Ireland, home of some of the toughest gun control in the world, but as pointed out in an earlier post this only applies to the law abiding.
Anyway, many years ago, in the bad old days, quite a few off duty ( and probably "on" duty as well ) police and prison officers drank at the Mallard bar in Magilligan.
So one day a would be armed robber comes in to rob said bar, goes up to the bar man and demands he empty the till, bar man ignores him, pulls another pint or two, Guiness that is, takes a while, "yer man" gets a bit agitated and says "I've got a gun you know" -- and waves it around,
To which the bar man says " so what --- so has everyone else in here" at which time the would be robber re-assessed the situation a bit more closely through the cigarette "steaugh" and decided to flee.
Not a shot was fired.
Unlike the English police to whom a gun is a novelty/big thrill/macho thing -- and hence quite a few accidental shootings.
Here in Northern Ireland, despite the number of drunk & alcohlic police officers, prison officers and UDR soldiers all armed & lots of "negligent discharges", very very few accidental shootings, drunk or sober.
