WTF are you talking about? In the Jim Crow days, many Southern states passed laws prohibiting blacks from owning guns. The resulting court cases that found those laws unconstitutional form the basis of case law on the right to bear arms. The fact that union members own guns, well, anyone with even a smidgen of knowledge of labor history in this country knows the truth of that.

I'm all for any citizen who hasn't a warrant, isn't insane, or hans't a violent felony conviction owning a gun. If you feel you must run down a list of minorities and SIG, don't leave out Samoans and religious groups.

I have never heard of a single instance of a gun, of it's own volition, killing a person.

This idea that the left in this country are a bunch of unarmed peaceniks is simply a myth, and I was pointing that out. If there is a threat in there, where precisely is it?
Just my opinion, but this is the kind of opportunity you tend to consistently miss. Here you find common ground with someone who opposes you politically. Rather than play on that common ground to earn credibility and even build a small degree of camaraderie, you find an avenue of dissent. That is not how you convince people of anything, that is how you polarize them.

Maybe this is just my off the wall take on this, but it seems that this is the norm for FTL, and a few others here. Camaraderie has never been a strong item for FTL, making his point and shoving it down his opponents (proper term in this case) throat is all that counts.

Well, Coming from Northern Ireland, home of some of the toughest gun control in the world, but as pointed out in an earlier post this only applies to the law abiding.
Anyway, many years ago, in the bad old days, quite a few off duty ( and probably "on" duty as well ) police and prison officers drank at the Mallard bar in Magilligan.
So one day a would be armed robber comes in to rob said bar, goes up to the bar man and demands he empty the till, bar man ignores him, pulls another pint or two, Guiness that is, takes a while, "yer man" gets a bit agitated and says "I've got a gun you know" -- and waves it around,
To which the bar man says " so what --- so has everyone else in here" at which time the would be robber re-assessed the situation a bit more closely through the cigarette "steaugh" and decided to flee.
Not a shot was fired.
PS
Unlike the English police to whom a gun is a novelty/big thrill/macho thing -- and hence quite a few accidental shootings.
Here in Northern Ireland, despite the number of drunk & alcohlic police officers, prison officers and UDR soldiers all armed & lots of "negligent discharges", very very few accidental shootings, drunk or sober.

The guy started a thread that essentially said I was a traitor, needing to go to gitmo to pick up my pals. As far as I am concerned, he can eat shit and die.

But not this thread. Dave is a tongue in cheek, dry humor kinda guy. Still, I do understand that you might not have been amused.
