As the brave chihuahua contemplates striking Iran like Iraq. Good luck with that, I'll still be here to tell you "I told you so".

We are not going to invade Iran. Bush is using military manuevers and amassing assets at the border simply to intimidate Iran into releasing the British troops and coming to the negotiating table over Iraq.

Bush has been trying to intimidate Iran for more than four years now. The man is a genius.

And Iran has been trying to intimidate us and defeat us in Iraq. It would be irresponsible for Bush to not be trying to do everything in his power to augment America's negotiating position vs. Iran and to attempt to bring them to the table to negotiate a resolution in Iraq. What's your point?

Bush has done nothing but provoke Iran, then cries foul when they react. At the same time, the administration is too clueless to engage Iran in any other fashion. Iran has been attempting to negotiate with us for years. The Bush administration has refused any and all suggestions to join them at the table. What on earth are you talking about?

I don't understand why you seem to be casting Iran as the one interested in peace and Bush as inept at dealing with them. Iran wanted negotiations a year ago when they perceived that they had the upper hand. Now, with some progress in Iraq, Bush upping the ante with the surge and several intelligence victories for the U.S. and Israel (Israel assissinated a key Iranian nuclear scientist and a key Iranian general defected to the U.S.), Iran is no longer looking to negotiate. They took the British hostages in an attempt to shift the momentum back to their side.

My broader point is that Bush should not negotiate with the Iranians from a position of weakness. The reason he has delayed is to get us in a superior position before engaging them. This is diplomacy 101.

GermanStar - You may not mean to sound like this, but I can't help but read in your post an underlying assumption of good intentions from Iran. If this is not the case, then OK. But to be clear - Iran is a hostile nation attempting to assert its dominance in the region. This is undesireable not only to the U.S. and Israel, but to most moderate arab nations as well. It is imperative that the U.S. control Iran's ambitions in the region. That means negotiating when we will win, not when Iran has the upper hand.

War in this case is neither desireable or useful. Diplomacy will be the vehicle that we use to achieve our goals, but it may take some time.

Iran has been attempting to negotiate with the us since shortly after our foray into Afghanistan. And all Bush had to do to keep the upper hand and deal from a position of strength was avoid the massively stupid invasion of Iraq in the first place.

Neither Iran nor Bush are interested in peace, but we do not have equal claim to employ military force in the Arabian peninsula, now do we?
