Justice official to plead the Fifth before Senate panel - CNN.com

Ever noticed how the conservatives on this board spend most of their time excusing crime? Perjurers found guilty by our system of justice, are somehow not really guilty. Border patrol agents who shoot people and then tamper with evidence and end up spending 12 years in prison are their heros. Gonzalez here has obviously committed perjury, and of course, they will defend him. Wolfowitz, Rumsfled, routinely gave perjured testimony to Congress. Bush, an obvious war criminal, is a god to them who must be defended at all costs, lest his fallibility cause their religion to collapse. But what are they really? A crime syndicate, men who game the system of democracy in order to deliver this country to corporate oil fascists and the rest of their super-rich pals. They need a docile population, spied on, afraid to speak, deprived of their most basic rights while they ply the lies. Gonzalez, the Toture Boy, he is the kingpin of the whole rotten system, a Justice Department hijacked to be the people's enemy instead of their defender, exposed, for all to see.

Last time someone played that game, it was Oliver North, not exactly a member of the Justice Dept...

BTW, did anyone take note of this woman's education and credentials? Talk about apalling...

This is like the Libby conviction - attack Plame and her standing, as if that would do Libby any good when he shares a cell with Bubba. Gonzales and Meirs and Rice and Rumsfeld and Bush have all been fabricating stories to press their agenda for six years. Only in the last few has the agenda been so blatantly to cover their collective hiney, and as that begins to fall apart, the sacrificial anodes of this moral corrosion of government are turning on their bosses. Pleading the 5th does little but encourage and reinforce those on the hunt. They can smell red meat. Jim

Shit, I would take the 5th too. They always have to do something better than the previous adminstration. Clinton's fired seven and now Bush's has fired eight.
If they can't do as they are told they need to throw their asses out da door. Political appointees are just that, political.

Has as been mentioned, the issue is perjured testimony, not the president's right to hire an fire these people. Under our system of government, the executive is required to give an account of his actions to Congress in a process called "oversight". Bush my hire and fire at will, but the Constitution requires that he give a truthful of account of why he did so. His delegate, Gone-zalez, apparently did not choose to do that, hence the scandal.

And, ultimately, the only mistake made was to offer an explanation other than "they serve at the pleasure and they don't please." For that, Gonzalez should bow out. If you're not good at the game (and the game is politics, pure and simple), you shouldn't play it at the professional level.
