Executive Order 9835

60 years ago today......

Mar 22 1947
U.S. President Harry Truman signs Executive Order 9835, beginning the Great Loyalty Crusade. 2,000,000 government employees were required to take oaths and submit to loyalty investigations; of those a mere 139 were terminated in the span of three years.

Pretty creepy, eh?

When a country is at war "creepy" things can sometimes be appropriate...

The Patriot Act is far from a "Great Loyalty Crusade," but it is necessary and appropriate--though some people think it too is "creepy."

Don't believe everything you think

Elements of the Patriot Act are very necessary, other elements are far from necessary. And many are not appropriate. It was a bad piece of law, written in Fear. In a post about computers Cigar mentioned Fear, Uncertainty and Dread - FUD. That is much of how the Patriot Act was written.

Note the current FBI issues of illegal and improper use of their wiretap and searchwarrant powers that were granted in the Patriot Act. FBI has fully admitted they did these things and "are sorry". I think "are sorry they got caught" is more appropriate.

Now that there is a Congress and White House that has some Checks and Balance, maybe a Patriot Act that both fully protects the people of this country and fully protects the rights of the people of this country will be written into law.

W/ any new and complicated legislation like this there will be honest mistakes made in its initial implementation. I think the PA was carefully crafted by level-headed people. It is only paranoiacs such as yourself who are beFUDdled.

Do you think we will ever not be "at war" again?
Will we ever be able to demand the transparency from our government that it is demanding from us now?

^^^^^

That would be funny-if it wasn't so tragically true.
