Beverly Hills to have first Iranian mayor

Beverly Hills to have first Iranian mayor
Mon, 12 Mar 2007 06:23:33
For the first time in its history, the U.S. city of Beverly Hills may have a Persian born mayor.

Jimmy Delshad has claimed victory in his run for re-election to the City Council, placing him in line to become mayor of a community that for decades has been a hub for many Iranian immigrants from different backgrounds.

Some estimates put the Persian community in Beverly Hills as high as 20% of its population, while some claim it to be even higher, close to half or more.

With the vote count still not official, Delshad had the second-highest number of votes, or 21.8 percent, which would give him one of the two council seats up for grabs in Tuesday's election.

"The mayor's job in Beverly Hills is very important, very visible, and I think I'm up to it," said Delshad, 66, who received hugs from his wife and adult children when ballot tallies were announced.

Beverly Hills mayors are not directly elected by voters. Rather, the five members of the City Council choose the mayor from among themselves to serve a one-year term.

Delshad, first elected to the council in 2003, is next in line by seniority. The current mayor steps down 20 March, 2007.

Delshad left Iran as a teenager and has been in the United States for 48 years. He started a successful computer hardware company, which he later sold.

Beverly Hills is a city in the western part of Los Angeles County, California.

Oh, cool. So the upcoming Iran war can be run from Beverly Hills

Seriously speaking, I think it is an excellent development.

It shows how different are WE from THEM.

We do NOT CARE about the origin. We do NOT CARE abouth the religion. All we care about is whether this is a good wo/man.

That's the American Way.

We have Arabs in Congress. We have the Muslims as Mayors and executives.

Just to mention:

There is an Arab in Israel who briefly took the post of the Israeli President.

Can you imagine any arab country having a Jew in their high office?

God Bless America and let it be this way forever.

His first move would be to impememnt the use of Nuclear powered buses and trolleys. Then, rugs would be placed at every street corner for the evening prayer.

Who cares, if he is capable and qualified what does it matter? I have many friends who are Iranian born and they are some of the most intelligent and honest people I know. On a side note they also throw stunning weddings that are not afraid to celebrate different religious backgrounds.
