I used to play alot, then I met my wife (who owned a bar) and she creamed me game after game so I quit. Now I play pocket pool.
The first time we did the nasty was on the pool table in her bar, btw.

IMOP, the biggest gambling game in pool is one pocket. A great, and very intricate game. A lot like playing chess, setting traps, coming up with your own moves, and executing.

9-ball was my game. I started as a kid. There was a place in Chicago called Bensingers(GS may remember) at Clark and Diversey. All the past greats played there, Fats.....Mosconi, you name it. This is before billiards was a yuppie past-time. The halls reeked of urine, blood and cheap beer. You would always enter the place(in the basement) at night and end up staying until the next day(if you were lucky). I still remember the huge red door and opening it to a scorching sun, shit-faced and sleep deprived. That's gotta be the worst shock on anybodies system.

I have heard a lot of stories mentioning Bensingers from road player friends.
At the old 24HR Rusty's at Dallas European Crossroads, we had some of the top road players torture some of the top tournament players. Just the right amount of sleaze, with most of the patrons hustlers, bookies, dope dealers, pimps, callgirls, and other assorted degenerates.
I watched Efrem Reyes play 9-ball races to 9 games with the then U.S. 9-ball champion Danny Medina for for 10K. The started playing even with Medina having zero chance of winning.
The last set Reyes gave him the first break and the call 8. After sinking a ball on the break, Medina ran the first rack up to the seven, got out of line, and hung up the ball after a thin cut.
Reyes finished that rack, and in the other eight, made a ball on the break, and just run out. I guess if you don't miss, you can't lose. Medina never got another shot.
Reyes one pocket game is even better.

I still have all my cues (12). My favorite is an old Szamboti I got from Bob Vanover. My first cue in the U.S. I got from Bobby Hunter.

Another favorite is 3 - cushion.

I've played pool, I've watched billiards, and I've been snookered...

Don't believe everything you think

Those were the days. The group of guys I hung around with all liked pocket billiards, but in the grand scheme of things, none of us were very good.

There was a pool hall in the basement of an arcade here that had about 15 pocket tables and only 1 snooker table. I used to watch the snooker games with some awe, because those guys were always way out of my league.

I was staying at a nice resort hotel once that had a billards table. I remember messing around on it (lol, not quite like TKs experience) and that looked like it requires a lot of skill. This of course reminds me of Paul Newman playing that rich guy around Derby time in Louisville on his private table - great movie!

Aside from 9-ball there was another gambling game that was popular here called Keely (sp). Everybody drew a "pill" out of a bottle with a number on the flat side of it (1-15) and placed their's under the cushion. Then the game was played like rotation and if you sunk your own ball, everybody paid you whatever the stakes were. The other "pay balls" were arbitrary, but I think 5,7, and 9 were usually used.

Thanks for the memories Teutone.

Did you have to stand on a beer crate?

Hehehe, no, I'm 6'1", but I did have a g/f who was 5'1" and I can't say I'm a great fan of 'dancing' with short women.
