Mob rule is a very, very bad thing. Worse than the mentality you so routinely deplore, of our President, who declared world leaders to be either "with us, [or] against us".
All republics have a democratic underpinning, you confuse the mode of election with the mode of government. In a pure democracy, both elections and the passing of laws is done by the electorate as a whole. Executive officers are elected in both systems, the difference is in a Republic representatives are elected by the people to pass laws. In a pure democracy, as existed in Ancient Greece, the people sit as the legislature. But in both systems, the people democratically elect their representatives.
The US government was only quasi-democratic at the time of our founding. Many states had property requirements and religious tests for voters, and Senators were selected by the legislatures instead of thru direct election, and of course, a fifth of the people in the country were slaves. Most of the early proto-fascism of this country has been swept away over time or by Civil War, with the last vestige left being the anti-democratic little demon known as the Electoral College, which allowed a fascist to be elected president of this country in the year 2000. One day, that will be gone too. The presidency of Mad King George has given the argument for its elimination new impetus. I am looking forward to the Democratic Party's democratic 3/4 majority in 2008 to kill off the EC son of a bitch.
