To get information advantageous to them that they can get no other way.
If you don't think that we spy on all of our allies and they on us, then you are very, very naive.
For example, I have absolutely no doubt that we spy on the UK and they spy on us. That's a good thing, IMO. It is one way of assuring honesty--trust but verify, dontcha know. If we're telling them one thing and doing something else then we aren't much damn good as allies to the UK, for example.
Now sometimes friendly powers screw-up in their spying. Like the Pollard case. I hope to goodness that bastard never gets out of jail and I'm proud of Bill Clinton for resisting some awfully powerful people in that case. Clinton could very easily have pulled a Marc Rich, but didn't. And Hillary is paying the price.
On the other hand, israel has given several indication that it doesn't want to go through that embarrassment again by essentially not helping would be spies when American authorities found them out. I know of 2 cases like that in the past decade or so. That sends a powerful signal in a subtle way.
A better argument from your perspective (in my opinion), would be to bring-up the unconscionable attack on an American Navy vessel during the 1968 war. From my perspective there has never been adequate explanation and the sailors and their families have been treated abysmally by our own government, much less Israel.
