Gen Patraeus: Surge Has 1 in 4 Chance of Success per Rep Sen Smith

Below is an excerpt from an article in The Oregonian quoting Republican Senator Gordon Smith while defending his position opposing Bush's proposed surge of 20,000 troops in Iraq at The Dorchester Conference, an event in its 44th year, that attracts mainly Republican activists to Seaside each March to discuss the top issues of the day. There were reportedly approximately 500 in attendance. The Senator reveals that in conversations with General David Petraeus that the General believes the surge has one in four chances of succeeding.

I am stunned, as I was fairly impressed with General Petraeus' qualifications and general approach, as outlined in Fiasco. With a one in four chance of success who in their right mind would proceed? I agree with the Senator from Oregon, we need hundreds of thousands more troops if we are going to gain control of the area, so you are left to wonder what the hell the surge is intended to accomplish. If it is really to show our patience is not inexhaustible, why couldn't we demonstrate that without endangering more troops?

Here is the excerpt:

"If you're really going to do a surge, you don't do it with 20,000, you do it with 250,000," he said, noting that Baghdad is a city of nearly 7 million people. But he said the United States cannot afford such a response; instead it has to come from the Iraqi Army.

Smith said he recently spoke with Gen. David Petraeus, the new top military commander in Iraq, who told him the troop surge has only a one in four chance of succeeding.

He said his views are aimed at showing the Iraqi government that U.S. patience is "not inexhaustible."

come on jim, you're ruining guag's, chicken's and others' "reality" with this stuff.

i however agree and think a surge, if any, should be in those larger numbers but then that would really shock and awe most supporting americans.
