We don't need troops in Afghanistan. From what I understand, they make little compounds out in the middle of nowhere. Until they start setting up shop in the middle of towns, all we need is good intelligence to find the targets and some cruise missiles or other long-range weapons. Maybe a helicopter to clean up.

Short of troops in Afghanistan? Of course we are, guage, you fucking idiot.

Recall that earlier generations faced down fascism and communism not just with missiles and tanks, but with sturdy alliances and enduring convictions. They understood that our power alone cannot protect us, nor does it entitle us to do as we please. Instead, they knew that our power grows through its prudent use; our security emanates from the justness of our cause, the force of our example, the tempering qualities of humility and restraint.

-President Barack Obama, 1st Inaugural address

What then would YOU have done in WW II?
Let's see:
CBI: China, Burma, India Theater (that only mentions three of the countries involved.)
Pacific Theater: From Alaska to Australia
European Theater: From Russia to North Africa
Not to mention the Atlantic Ocean, The Indian Ocean, and the Caribbean.

You see no disparity in these situations? We didn't invade a peaceful Europe because our VP thought it smelled bad, did we?

Or are you suggesting that there is wisdom in simultaneously fighting two wars on two fronts for no reason other than to fight two wars on two fronts?

Number one, I'm suggesting that your statement makes little sense:
Nobody gets the genius of fighting two simultaneous wars -- one in defense of our nation, and one just for fun.
This is the same war based on the available information at the time.
Number two, this is hardly two fronts as it has been known in the past.
Number three, there are less troops involved overall then in just the invasion of North Africa.
Number four, yes, President (not VP) FDR wanted to invade Europe because it smelled bad. It took the Japanese attack to allow him to do just that.

It is not the same war -- they are entirely unrelated. If you believe that using our undiluted resources to focus on the terrorists and secure Afghanistan was a bad idea, welcome to the Bush administration. Iraq was a non-player, there is nothing to suggest otherwise other than the misdirection and misinformation promoted by the Bush administration to further their own mysterious agenda. Iraq was just sitting idly by, minding its own business, which is undoubtedly what it would be doing today in a much safer, more stable world than the one we're currently faced with.

Other than trying to assassinate a former US President and ignoring the 17 UN resolutions and targeting our aircraft, yes they were idle!
