Well, suffice it to say you and I have an honest disagreement. I am not making "a little NeoCon attempt" to do anything, thank you very much. I believe that when Congress authorizes a war it has the responsibility to fund it. If Congress has changed its mind due to the election in 2006 it should de-authorize the war and provide funds to bring the troops home.

It should NOT, IMHO, order generals and the executive branch around with arbitrary timelines and meaningless benchmarks.

GermanStar is right on this count...

If congress wants to shut down the government that's fine by me, they have tried that before and they paid for it.
You assertion had nothing to do with what "the American public would stand for", you asserted they did not have the power. The answer is, yes they do. If they wanted to pass a budget requiring the spending of money in checks denominated in ten cent increments, they could do so.

We are not talking about Congress shutting down government, this is a different case. Congress will appropriate plenty of money to run everything. Bush can veto it, but when the folks back home howl, let's see if the veto stands.

What, specifically? De-authorizing the war? They might be working their way up to that vote but they haven't done it yet.
