Hey, mcbear. That's a couple of painting questions in a row and your rule of thumb (with which I agree) reminds me of an old joke:
A city feller buys some acreage and moves to the country. He hires a local dude to build him a corral on his property because he thinks he should have some horses. They agree on an hourly rate plus materials and the city feller goes back inside.
After a while and hearing no sounds, he walks outside to see the local sitting on the tailgate of his truck, just staring at the area where he should be building the corral.
The city feller says, "Hey, what gives? I hired you to build me a corral, not to sit around!"
The dude replies, "Well, my daddy always told me that for any job worth doin', half the job is the thought you put into it. Now I reckon this is gonna take me about 4 days, so I'm gonna sit here and think about it for two."
