US 'Iran attack plans' revealed.

From BBC News just now

US 'Iran attack plans' revealed

USS John C Stennis is being deployed to the Persian Gulf

US contingency plans for air strikes on Iran extend beyond nuclear sites and include most of the country's military infrastructure, the BBC has learned.
It is understood that any such attack - if ordered - would target Iranian air bases, naval bases, missile facilities and command-and-control centres.
The US insists it is not planning to attack, and is trying to persuade Tehran to stop uranium enrichment.
The UN has urged Iran to stop the programme or face economic sanctions.
But diplomatic sources have told the BBC that as a fallback plan, senior officials at Central Command in Florida have already selected their target sets inside Iran.
BBC security correspondent Frank Gardner says the trigger for such an attack reportedly includes any confirmation that Iran was developing a nuclear weapon - which it denies.
Alternatively, our correspondent adds, a high-casualty attack on US forces in neighbouring Iraq could also trigger a bombing campaign if it were traced directly back to Tehran.
Deadline
Earlier this month US officials said they had evidence Iran was providing weapons to Iraqi Shia militias. At the time, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said the accusations were "excuses to prolong the stay" of US forces in Iraq.
Middle East analysts have recently voiced their fears of catastrophic consequences for any such US attack on Iran.
Britain's previous ambassador to Tehran, Sir Richard Dalton, told the BBC it would backfire badly by probably encouraging the Iranian government to develop a nuclear weapon in the long term.
Last year Iran resumed uranium enrichment - a process that can make fuel for power stations or, if greatly enriched, material for a nuclear bomb.
Tehran insists its programme is for civil use only, but Western countries suspect Iran is trying to build nuclear weapons.
The UN Security Council has called on Iran must suspend its enrichment of uranium by 21 February.
If it does not, and if the International Atomic Energy Agency confirms this, the resolution says that further economic sanctions will be considered.

Wow, that must inspire some Sunnis with bombs to get a high-profile attack in the works. Just think of the damage they'd do to us if we were to become distracted with Iran. Talk about our men in uniform being sitting ducks.

Wait, wait.

You mean to tell me there is an actual plan?

Really?

We're not just going to run in there willy-nilly and start shooting up the place?

Well, hey, then this would work out lots better than Iraq!

I'll bet there is a plan for invasion for nearly every country on Earth. Wanna bet? Why do you think we were able to ramp-up invasion of Afghanistan, for example? One of my co-workers was with DMA back in the 1960's and created vegetation maps and geological and hydrological maps of Afghanistan. DoD makes and updates all sorts of maps. As does CIA. You think they get them from National Geographic (well, actually, yes they do! They will use maps from any source).

Dad worked on invasion plans for Norway, Sweden and Finland back in the late 1950's. That's what DoD does, plan for wars. They do it all day, every day, regardless of who is in the White House and regardless of what is going on in world politics.

Based on the performance in Iraq, it seems there may not be much effort spent on those plans, and no assurance we won't "run in there willy-nilly and start shooting up the place" and then try to pass that off as a plan, and when all hell breaks loose, have someone suggest "no one could have known" the lack of a real plan could cause such a poor result. Which post? The one about no cattle or the US planning on attacking Iran? I saw George with a hat so I think it is safe to assume that one is correct.
