US to take in 7,000 Iraqi refugees

US to take in 7,000 Iraqi refugees

by David MillikinWed Feb 14, 12:43 PM ET

The United States plans to take in some 7,000 Iraqi refugees by October, more than a tenfold increase in the number of Iraqi asylum seekers admitted since the 2003 invasion that toppled Saddam Hussein, a senior US official said.
Washington had been under fire for its response to the mounting refugee crisis which has seen two million Iraqis flee their war-ravaged nation and another nearly two million displaced inside the country.
State Department spokesman Sean McCormack revealed the decision to allow another 7,000 Iraqis into the United States after Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice discussed the crisis here with Antonio Guterres, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.
McCormack described the figure of 7,000 as a "target" and not a ceiling for the number of Iraqis who will be allowed into the country.
The 7,000 will fall under an existing US refugee quota which provides for accepting 5,500 asylum seekers from the Middle East and South Asia and has a separate "floating" quota of 20,000 not linked to any particular region, McCormack said.
The figure does not include Iraqis deemed to be at risk for having worked with the US government inside Iraqi and who may be given US residency under a separate program, he said.
Since 2003, the United States has granted asylum to just 663 Iraqis, according to figures released in Congress last week.
The United Nations estimates that some two million Iraqis out of a population of 26 million have left the country.
Another 1.7 million have fled their homes to safer areas inside Iraq -- a figure believed to be rising at the rate of 50,000 per month.
Under growing pressure to act, Rice last week announced the creation of a high-level task force to study the Iraq refugee issue and she asked Congress for an additional 60 million dollars for the fiscal year beginning in October to deal with the problem.
US officials were also expected to announce later Wednesday an increase in US contributions to emergency UN efforts to meet the humanitarian needs of Iraqi refugees in neighboring Syria and Jordan.
In a sign of the new urgency being given the problem here, Rice revealed in Congress last week that she had authorized the US charge d'affaires in Damascus to discuss the Iraqi refugee situation with the Syrian government, despite a US embargo on high-level contacts with the regime.
According to UN figures, about 600,000 Iraqis are currently living in Syria, and another 600,000 are in neighboring Jordan.
While publicly accepting the need for greater US action, the administration is walking a fine line on the issue -- fearful that helping Iraqis find foreign refugees will unleash an even greater exodus, undermining US efforts to stabilize the country.
"Certainly we want to do everything we can to encourage those Iraqis who are going to be critical to help rebuilding their country stay in Iraq and invest in their future," McCormack said last week.
The issue is particularly delicate when it concerns Iraqis who fear for their lives because they have been working for the US occupation as interpreters and support staff.
While the US military has long had a program in place to identify and provide US residency to people found to be at risk for their collaboration with US forces, the State Department has no such formal process.
Purple fingers anyone?
Are we taking these people in because things are getting better over there like so many here argued?

Don't know, but I am sure they are going to live in places like Alabama where the Top Gear guys got pelted by those rednecks. You know the ones that support our president's policies so I am sure they will support having those people share some beer with them.

I assume that with all of the compassion and we done those Iraqi's wrong sentiment shown here by most that the BWOT members like the Professor, FTL, GS, Elau and the other Libs then I expect a couple of Iraqi's will be taken in by each one's family to look after, shown compassion and to teach a trade.

New Thread Topic among the LIBS here: What will you teach your new Iraqi friend once you get him?

No, not all. Just the 7,000 that Al-Qaeda will arrange to come here.
