My view on abortion is entirely legalistic. The 14th Amendment guarantees rights to "all citizens either born or naturalized." The 15th Amendment prohibits involuntary servitude, and I would say commanding a woman to spend the next eighteen years of her life raising a kid she does not want is definitely that. The moral arguments mean nothing to me, both sides have equal merit. But the pro-choice has the law and the American principle of one being in charge of one's own destiny on its side. The prolifers have a job to do: they have to convince 2/3s of Congress and 3/4s of the State legislatures that abortion should be outlawed. It ain't never going to happen, so it is time for them to hang it up, and go whine about it in church where people will actually listen, like they have done for the last two thousand years about men fucking each other in the ass. It will do as much good, women have been doing abortions for as long as gays have been banging each other, and the Christians have never been able to much about either without resorting to killing people. In the public arena, the abortion debate is over. Now all you Christians go somewhere and whine about, and leave the rest of us the fuck alone.
Recall that earlier generations faced down fascism and communism not just with missiles and tanks, but with sturdy alliances and enduring convictions. They understood that our power alone cannot protect us, nor does it entitle us to do as we please. Instead, they knew that our power grows through its prudent use; our security emanates from the justness of our cause, the force of our example, the tempering qualities of humility and restraint.
