Sounded like an urban legend to me. Check out this newsletter, however. Looks legit.

**********

I had a not so nearly amazing thing happen to me, although it deeply moved me nevertheless. I was in college in England and had a chance to do some traveling on "the continent". This would have been 1986. I arrived in a town in Germany called Meinz by train at about 10pm on a Wednesday night. The town was basically shut down. I couldn't find a place to stay, so I camped out under a tree with low branches in a park...a big NO NO in Germany. Had an awful night. A family of rats was scurrying around...and the whole time I think I am going to be arrested.

The next morning I am trying to find my way to a boat terminal on the river to take a trip to Koblenz. I am lost. Standing looking at a map next to a trolley stop when a grandfatherly man started speaking to me in German. German is not one of my languages...but I could make out his questioning, "Ein shtudent?' I said, "Yes. I am a student. i am looking for the boat. Das boot?"

He made a gesture that indicated he woould show me the way. We got on the trolley and he paid my fare before I had a chance to dig for coins. We sat down and he started talking. I realized that he was speaking VERY broken English. Basically he said that he had been to "America". He was in Florida during "the war". Then "after the war he came home". He thought Florida was nice and that Americans were nice. He said "Americans good".

I was totally confused. Made no sense to me.

We got off at the stop he indicated and he walked us through a market where he bought me an apple and said something I did not understand. Then he walked me to the boat dock and was getting ready to pay my fare. I showed him my railpass (I was pre-paid) and thanked him profusely.

I told this story to one of my roommates from Wales. He said, "The guy was a POW, you idiot. Didn't you know that they sent them to the states?"

I did not know. In California all they talked about was the Japanese camps where they locked up American citizens.

Here was a guy who- when he was probably the exact age I was backpacking around -was a Prisoner of War in a camp in Florida while our countries fought each other.

I will never forget that as long as I live.

In my area, 98 percent of the greenhouse/garden centers are German named. It turns out POW's were sent here and employed by the nurseries. Many stayed to open their own businesses.
My favorite center and a brief history:

Pesche's Flowers | Garden Calendar

They are not POWs.

But children and liberals can't possibly understand the difference.

Prisoners Of War

Is it the Prisoners, Of, or War part that doesn't apply? They are either POWs or there is no War On Terror -- can't have it both ways... Or am I missing something?

Oh, my bad, I forgot that they are "enemy combatants". The difference escapes me, I must be a "child" or a "liberal", I can't remember anymore. But just trust W, he knows.
