The current political situation in the US is starting to become eerily like the political situation in England prior to the English Civil War. An out-of-control and immensely unpopular Executive, Charles I, refused to recognize the power and authority of Parliament. The country split in half, and before it was over with, a ten year civil war and a military dictatorship had to be endured by the people of England, who along the way cut off the king's head. Most historians trace the cause of the Civil War to the personality of Charles I, an arrogant, uncompromising egomaniac who was also not particularly bright. it is said Bush traces his family geneology to English Kings, and now I am starting to believe it. All the words of Bush and Cheney indicate they are about to embark on a campaign of attempting to rule the United States with no clear base of support. Where are we headed?
Recall that earlier generations faced down fascism and communism not just with missiles and tanks, but with sturdy alliances and enduring convictions. They understood that our power alone cannot protect us, nor does it entitle us to do as we please. Instead, they knew that our power grows through its prudent use; our security emanates from the justness of our cause, the force of our example, the tempering qualities of humility and restraint.
-President Barack Obama, 1st Inaugural address
