Change the world. Seriously.

A couple of interesting nuggets came across the screen today.

Not sure if anyone's ever heard of Kiva.org...it's a site that volunteers have developed and maintained, as a way of using internet technologies to funnel money to entrepreneurs in developing countries. The term is microfinance, and it means that a lady running a beauty shop on a remote island could get the $250 she needs to expand her business. The loans appear to be interest-only at this stage, and the borrower sets the repayment terms, but the repayment rate is at 100%.

My first fear was that this could be used to launder money, or funnel it to terrorist groups, but I'm not sure whether or not the staff evaluates requests for money or checks out the people making them.

Either way, it's a fascinating story and - if untainted by nefarious groups and evil purposes - a very unique, real way to make a difference.

Back home, the site Prosper.com allows you to 'bid' on loans made to Americans for various purposes - from medical bills to expanding DJ businesses. The borrower is profiled, and you set the interest rate you wish to receive. The borrower decides whether or not he wants your portion of the overall loan. This prevents any one person from being on the hook for the entire amount a borrower seeks. At 20% interest to be realized, one could certainly find worse things to do with their disposable income.

We already have a similar program in Chicago. Ask for Anthony "Fat Tony" and Giancarlo "GiGi the hatchet"

The second one (prosper) looks more scam-ish than Kiva...the story on Kiva isn't just some off-the-wrist bit of tabloid bullet points, and I generally trust Computerworld's writing. PBS has done a story on them in the past also, which as the story reads, brought quite an influx of visitors to their site.

Nothing you should spend money on that you can't do without, either way.
