I think the Grand Canyon was created by global cooling. Good thing we turned that around.

The version we sane people use is that it is most likel a collapsed caldera that was then cut by water action over millions of years. But of course, that would conflict with The Thought of Chairman Bush, so please ignore it.

Recall that earlier generations faced down fascism and communism not just with missiles and tanks, but with sturdy alliances and enduring convictions. They understood that our power alone cannot protect us, nor does it entitle us to do as we please. Instead, they knew that our power grows through its prudent use; our security emanates from the justness of our cause, the force of our example, the tempering qualities of humility and restraint.

There are those that would maintain the Grand Canyon was formed when a Jew dropped a nickle down a gopher hole.

Stupidity is cancerous. In his book Why Christianity Must Change or Die, Episcopal Bishop Shelby Spong refers to Fundamentalism as "post Darwinian nonsense". His point is simple: any religion that claims to represent the truth cannot do so by embracing what the public increasing knows are lies. To the educated people, this story of fools trying insert what we know is utter preposterous bilge into official documents and then attempt to call it "science" give us a mental picture of their movement as a whole as utter buffoonery. As time goes on, less and less people are inclined to take them seriously on any issue.

When I was a junior in highschool I wrote a paper where I made it very clear to my teacher that I thought he and those that believed as he did were idiots. Religion was for the feeble minded, etc.

This was at a Jesuit Prep school, and he was a Jesuit Priest and my English teacher. Of course as an S.J. he had two graduate degrees. One in physics and the other in eastern religions.

(My parents were cleaning out their garage recently and gave me a stack of old stuff from 25 years ago that included this homework assignment.)

He wrote this brief reply to my juvenile rant:

Concerning God and religion please consider the following quote:

"The impious man is not the man who rejects the gods of the multitudes, but the man who adheres to the conception the multitudes has of the gods."

************

Only a child or the intellectually child-like fails to recognize that it is the height of arrogance and ignorance to paint all people of faith with a broad brush.

The picture that is drawn by "Christians" when this crap is promulgated in their name, and they do nothing, is that they all bought in and swallowed. And, the world community I spoke of is the one we live in and comptete with for jobs, resources and productivity. That can be anyone you want to do business with or otherwise interact with - and if you don't want to include the French, be my guest. Others of us in this free country might. Jim
Please tell us what you think about Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton. The minister and the man with the biggest bible. Oh yes, and 99 percent of the African-Americans who vote so loyally for Democrats.

Please explain what has been restricted by school boards, aside from mentioning Christmas or Easter.

You don't have the education or the intelligence required to have a serious discussion about things like evolution and scientific theories about the beginnings of the universe. You guys have made that very clear. Discussions of dark matter and dark energy fall on closed liberal minds in this forum because when cutting edge scientific theory is explored, inevitably it leads to the realization of just how much we don't understand. And just how much faith is required to believe. String theory? Light as a particle AND a wave? An accelerating universe?

So worship your secular idols and enjoy feeling superior to bible banging bufoons.

Wow. You are smarter than people who think dinosaurs are "jesus horses". Impressive.

It has been my observation that a majority of folks who call themselves 'Christian' actually reject both christianity and the pursuit of knowledge (science), in favor of a personal religion that falls somewhere in between, in order to accommodate their personal comfort zone. I actually have a great deal of respect for fundamentalists in at least one regard -- they possess the courage to acknowledge that the bible is either fiction or non-fiction -- period.

You are surprisingly narrowminded for someone educated in a Jesuit school system. Everything is not just black and white, good and bad, true or untrue. I happen to find the conflict between Christians and science a fabricated, ala' Mr. Rove, "issue" to deflect attention to meaningless trivia while real issues are ignored. Those who support the Christian political agenda by defending this essentially unnecessary interpretation of evolution, carbon dating, and other relatively scientifically uncontroversial theories as being anti-religion, anti-Christian are not a lot different than those who support other religious extremism. It is an arbitrary decision and they make it merely to fabricate an issue to gain political power. My view of Christianity has does not have things like evolution as the fulcrum on which the viability of believing in Christ depends.

In the case of local school boards, the courts have had to step in to prevent evolution from being removed from the science curriculum, and to stop requiring the Christian "explanation" derived from the bible from being taught as a legitimate alternate scientific theory.

Go back to your Jesuit instructors and ask them about these conflicts made by religous politicians to grab some political power. Were you taught by those Jesuits that the bible had the answers and science texts that did not comply with these explanations for all natural phenomena, verbatim, were worthy of being burned? If so, you were involved in a unique Jesuit group as my contacts with them have always been the opposite.

Pay a little more attention to the subject matter. There are millions of people being manipulated by the leaders of their faith for personal political power. Christian or Islamic fundamentalists that engage in these activities are all about the same as I see it. Jim
