Upstate SC may be a good compromise. Nesteled between Charlotte and Atlanta with easy access to both, yet far enough away to excape the mega urban sprawl from both.

Ashville is very nice apart from the winter weather on mountain roads.

This quaint little charmer is on 10 acres in my neck of the woods, offered at $324,900. Only 2,700 square feet, 4 bed/4 bath. I didn't bother looking too hard, because in this price range, you can in fact get a lot more house but they aren't listed on Realtor.com as they're mostly new construction.

This one is a little more urban - 3,500 square feet 4 bed/4 bath/3 car garage, offered at a more reasonable $274,900.

Ah, a dust ranch.

... that has to be mowed. BTW, the golf courses here all have green grass, not that fancy yellow stuff.

Since you mentioned Georgia, my girlfriend is stuck on Savannah, partly because several of her relatives retired and died there, so she's been there a lot. Our summer vacation last year was spent mostly on the Savannah beach, and I was not that impressed. The humidity and heat were awful.

Bermuda and zoysia go dormant (yellow) in the winter. Which, of course, you don't have (winter, that is).

There are places you can live that don't have grass to mow, that aren't located in blast furnaces. They're called lofts. Also, old farts live in condominiums that rarely have grass. Either of these may suit your tastes...

And Oklahoma is so plush. Bermuda "grass" (I think it's a vile f**king weed myself) goes dormant in winter here as well. The folks here who have grass, remove it, then plant winter lawns, this to be repeated twice each and every year.

Here is another lawn-free place to reside (AZ is the boating capital of America, BTW):
