On purchasing a caravan.

If a caravan is within the 25 to 30 foot length, does it matter if the tow vehicle is gas or diesel?

No refined fuels required, just a bale of hay, a canteen of water and a hot date for your personal sustenance. And maybe some Preparation H.

If you live in Maryland, it is called a "trailer". :-)

The length isn't as important as the weight. My ML 430 tows a 30 foot boat trailer...but the boat is a light pontoon boat. Total weight less than 3500 pounds.

A longer wheelbase makes driving safer when towing a longer trailer, generally speaking.

A diesel generally develops more torque and will tow with less effort and wear on the vehicle for a comparable amount of HP.

Ah...now that's of interest! A fact of which seems perfectly sensible but I had not considered.

But will it climb/merge/pass? Probably, now that I think of it, I HAVE been passed by monster Ford Diesels pulling 5th wheels.

Diesels are normally preferred for towing for the reasons Dave has mentioned. It might be better in the long run since with so much torque at low RPMs there will be less stress on the engine for passing, hill climbing, or accelerating. On the highway it might not matter since you've already gotten the thing moving so you've got the momentum helping you out.

A longer wheelbase is also preferred since the bigger of the two should be the one controlling. Something like that. Which is why we prefer the minivan to tow over the ML. But there are limits with the minivan which is the tow rating, 2000lbs. :

You mentioned Ford Powerstrokes passing you while pulling trailers. Those are unbelievably powerful. The fact that they're turbo diesels doesn't help with the wide range of modding to give you even more power.
