AsianML Study Group - Part 3

It's that time of year again. In less than a month I'll be meeting with my counselor to set up classes for next year. The form mentions what I want to major in - again. WHAT DO I WANT TO MAJOR IN?!?!

I'm also in a tight spot for my senior year. I want to apply to U-M Ann Arbor med school. If any of you know, how many years of foreign language to they require, or at least recommend? I'm only on my first year of Spanish, and I plan on taking Spanish (I, II, III) the rest of high school (if all goes as planned).

But that's a problem in itself. I also want to take EMT my senior year, but the way I've tried setting up my "four year plan" for high school, it might not work. The only class I can afford to not take my senior year would be Spanish III, so I can fit EMT in.

I don't know if I want to risk not meeting any of the requirements for a class that I actually need.

I don't know what to do. I don't really want to wait until the end of my junior year to see how everything goes because it might be too late then.

Hey, animals.

Congrats on looking well ahead, hope you do that when you're driving, too.

Re: Ann Arbor, I'd bet if you hit their website they'll have a contact e-mail and if you toss an inquiry they'll get back to you with the appropriate information. Probably better than you'd get from the OT section of a vehicle forum, anyway.

And unless you hear differently from AA, don't worry about missing out on Spanish III. I took three years of Spanish in high school and I remember just about none of it, and virtually none from the third year. I do remember the first "dialog" I learned first year, though...and I've never been able to use it. "?Donde esta Cristina? ?En la sala?" "No, en la cocina."

Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy; its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery. (Winston Churchill)

I went through the college-bound high school curriculum, and later took the standard pre-med courses in college. When I was in high school, the college-bound students were strongly encouraged to take a foreign language. I chose to take french in HS and that got me out of taking 2/5 semesters that were required for a BA. BS candidates were only required to complete 4 at that school.

At that time, medical schools did not require a foreign language at all. However, due to the terminology you will encounter there, I'd recommend either Greek or Latin. I realize they are both totally useless, but so was my French!

talk to your guidance counselor (doesn't every decent school have college advisor amongst the staff?) every semester and make sure you are fulfilling all the requirements. Pester the couselor often. Other option is to take summer courses offered by colleges and (mostly) private high schools that can add valid credits to your high school transcript. For example, you could take Spanish III so that you can free up your senior year for that EMT class.

If you really want to brush up on Spanish, take an after school job at McDonalds or work for your local landscaping company.

Thanks for the quick replies, as usual.

greg -- I forgot about that. I'll try and email them about their requirements in regards to foreign language. As for driving--I try my best. I've also noticed I get road rage...easily.

Musikmann -- BS candidates. I'd love to say I have a degree in BS, then my post whoring will be official. You're right about Greek or Latin, unfortunately my school offers neither of them.

Nao -- My counselor is a college adviser as well. I talked to her last week, but she didn't have solid answer for me. Private high schools sounds interesting, but I don't think there's one around me within a decent radius. I plan on getting a job soon, maybe at Burger King, but for different reasons than you might expect.

Maybe Dieselburns and I can have a franchise war.

My school offered Latin, but I was saying that rather "tongue in cheek" because as I stated, both are pretty useless. Unlike you, I didn't have a clue about a career when I was you age, and I congratulate you.

Another thing I like about your plan is that you have chosen to apply to a fine college (doesn't hurt to be a state resident either does it?). I had a college physics class and went to Ann Arbor to see the Ford nuclear reactor; we did some simple experiments using it. I was impressed with everything I saw.

Ah gotcha. Nope, it doesn't hurt to be a state resident. Plus it's only a 2 hour drive back home.

Come to think of it, one of my friends who's a junior currently, is applying to U-M med school as well to become a pediatrician. I should ask her too, since she's actually in the process of doing it.

I think I got ahead of myself. Are you planning to attend the University of Michigan for undergraduate and medical school?

One of my good friends slaved over design and construction of this thing in Ann Arbor.

Biomedical Research Building

and another friend worked on the master plan for the campus, speifically the complex of labs for UM's Life Sciences Initiative.

From what I understand, UM launched Life Sciences Initiative in order to bring together multiple disciplines from its own resources that will aid in its study of stem cell research.

It'll be quite an honor if you could one day use its facilities (other than the bathrooms).

That's what I'm thinking. Is that a bad idea?
