University Of Maryland Student Murdered In Arizona
(WJZ) COLLEGE PARK, Md. Life has intruded in a tragic way on the family of a University of Maryland student and her sorority sisters. Now both struggle with the senseless death of a daughter and friend.
Nicole Schiffman flew to Tempe, Az. to surprise childhood friend Carol Kestenbaum on her birthday. After a night out and about, the two returned to Kestenbaum's apartment to find 22-year-old Joshua Mendel, hiding in the bushes with two handguns.
"It's horrible. I'm heartbroken."
Nicole's father struggles in sorrow and anger after hearing how Mendel fatally opened fire on Kestenbaum, apparently angry because she disapproved of his dating another friend. As Shiffman ran for cover, police say Mendel fatally shot Nicole, then killed himself on what turns out to be Kestenbaum's 20th birthday.
"To kill somebody over another girl...it makes no sense. My daughter didn't even know him. Why is it so easy to get guns?"
Schiffman was a member of Phi Sigma sorority. Her death is devastating news to more than a hundred of her sorority sisters.
Schiffman's friends gather at their sorority house in College Park to remember a vibrant life cut short in a senseless act. Counselors were brought in to try and help them work through troubling questions and emotions.
"They're young, they're enthusiastic, they are filled with life and when life is taken from someone their age, it's devastating," said Louise Zaretta, Phi Sigma sorority.
Plans are underway to bus Shiffman's sorority sisters to New York for both funerals Tuesday. They are back to back in Bellmore, New York.
