I'd have to say the University of Massachusetts too, but I am partial having been born in Boston. I didn't realize Amherst was that far away, so to me, that would be a definite negative. In case you didn't know this, there used to be more than 60 colleges in the "greater Boston area".

Someone mentioned the University of Wisconsin, Madison campus. That was one of the schools I wanted to attend, but I was not admitted. Since that was not one of your (or her) choices, I guess you never considered it.

Now that I've read the other posts, being close to Washington D.C. sounds like the best idea, and Maryland should be good academically.

Well obviously based on the text below you can definitely rule out SMU.

DALLAS (AP) -- A group of Methodist ministers from across the nation launched an online petition drive Thursday urging Southern Methodist University to stop trying to land George W. Bush's presidential library.
The petition, on a newly created Web site, Home , says that "as United Methodists, we believe that the linking of his presidency with a university bearing the Methodist name is utterly inappropriate."

I went to school at VPI in those hills in Blacksberg Virginia, and you can put that school high up on your list as a school where those country boys "know" how to treat a big city girl.

Here is another 1 you can mark off your list, any school to start such an excellent program and then terminate such a great program does not deserve to even be considered by you.

School ends slave-master role playing teaching exercise after complaint

The exercise was halted after a teacher complained one student took her role as a slavemaster too seriously.

For four years, social studies teachers at Ringgold Elementary School have held an exercise that had some fifth-graders play slaves and others play masters while learning about the Civil War.

Teachers would divide their classes into slaves and masters on one day and then reverse the roles on the following day.

The students were not divided by race. Afterward, the students would write essays about "how it felt to be marginalized."

But Ringgold teacher and Montgomery County Commissioner Lettie Kendall, who is black, became concerned about the exercise after a white student refused to do a math assignment, saying she didn't have to because she was a master.

But that is the beauty of the place - woodsy setting, far, but not too far from Boston, and far, but not too far from New York.

Recall that earlier generations faced down fascism and communism not just with missiles and tanks, but with sturdy alliances and enduring convictions. They understood that our power alone cannot protect us, nor does it entitle us to do as we please. Instead, they knew that our power grows through its prudent use; our security emanates from the justness of our cause, the force of our example, the tempering qualities of humility and restraint.

That does sound nice. If only it wasn't in the arctic circle...

Kiplinger magazine recently rated the top 100 public universities and colleges. Surprisingly, Univ. of Florida was number 1, but I'd pick New College rated at number 6, because of student to teacher ratio of 10-1. Also because 91% of the incoming freshmen scored higher than 600 on their SATs. And because its only about a mile and a half from my house. :-)

But as for the schools you mention, I'd vote for UMass... Boston has probably more higher learning institutions than any other city in the US.

Jakarta,

I've enever responded to anyone via a thread, but in your case I must make an exception. Where do you come up with the incredible crap you post? Ever hear of a fact check? Living here in Mont. Co., there is no school named Ringgold, nor is there one in DC or Prince George's County next door. There's also no Lottie Kendall according to the Council web site. For the record I think you are a wack job.

You sir, are an instigator. And probably a masturbator as well.

Sheesh, and here I was wondering why he bothered to post about an elementary school (by any name) when the thread was inquring about a few specific universities...
