Waterloo sunset

dirty old river, must you keep rolling,
flowing into the night.
people so busy, make me feel dizzy,
taxi lights shine so bright.
but i don't need no friends,
as long as i gaze on waterloo sunset,
i am in paradise.

every day i look at the world from my window,
the chilly-chilliest evening time,
waterloo sunset's fine.

terry meets julie, waterloo station, every friday night,
but i am so lazy, don't want to wander, i stay at home at night.
but i don't feel afraid,
as long as i gaze on waterloo sunset,
i am in paradise.

every day i look at the world from my window,
the chilly-chilliest evening time,
waterloo sunset's fine.

millions of people swarming like flies 'round
waterloo underground.
terry and julie cross over the river
where they feel safe and sound.
and they don't need no friends
as long as they gaze on waterloo sunset,
they are in paradise.

every day i look at the world from my window,
the chilly-chilliest evening time,
waterloo sunset's fine

No, I was far too young, but I know that some consider it to be the first ever 'hard rock' track and that the 'fuzz' sound of the riffs were created by slashing the speaker cones with a razor blade. Rock 'n'roll eh?

Later, the effect was re-created with one of these:

Me too, and nearly every day when I run or pop into Sainsbury's so attired some snot-nosed little kid shouts out to me "118,118". Barstards. I don't have the 'tache though, so the joke's on them, hahahah.

Yes I do to, unless there is an earlier example.

"Neither Dave nor Ray Davies thought much of the first attempt at recording "You Really Got Me," and even Dave's girlfriend at the time commented that it didn't make her want to drop her knickers -- exactly what any good rock 'n' roll record should do.

Ray started to panic...."

Ray Davies was a god -- a true master of social commentary from within the rock-n-roll genre.

If you look toward the upper far left, you will clearly see that pic is of TK. Anyone who doubts the lyrical genius of Mr. Davies should take a few minutes and give Muswell Hillbillies a quick spin. "20th Century Man", "Acute Schizophrenia Paranoia Blues", "Skin and Bone", "Alcohol", and "Complicated Life" are absolutely brilliant.

This is the age of machinery,
A mechanical nightmare,
The wonderful world of technology,
Napalm hydrogen bombs biological warfare,

This is the twentieth century,
But too much aggravation
Its the age of insanity,
What has become of the green pleasant fields of jerusalem.

Aint got no ambition, Im just disillusioned
Im a twentieth century man but I dont wanna be here.
My mama said she cant understand me
She cant see my motivation
Just give me some security,
Im a paranoid schizoid product of the twentieth century.

You keep all your smart modern writers
Give me william shakespeare
You keep all your smart modern painters
Ill take rembrandt, titian, da vinci and gainsborough,

Girl we gotta get out of here
We gotta find a solution
Im a twentieth century man but I dont want to die here.

I was born in a welfare state
Ruled by bureaucracy
Controlled by civil servants
And people dressed in grey
Got no privacy got no liberty
Cos the twentieth century people
Took it all away from me.

Dont wanna get myself shot down
By some trigger happy policeman,
Gotta keep a hold on my sanity
Im a twentieth century man but I dont wanna die here.

My mama says she cant understand me
She cant see my motivation
Aint got no security,
Im a twentieth century man but I dont wanna be here.

This is the twentieth century
But too much aggravation
This is the edge of insanity
Im a twentieth century man but I dont wanna be here.
