Most of the tutorials online are written assuming you understand most of the controls. Thanks for reminding me about PS though because I forgot I even had it.
More people I've talked to don't learn Photoshop until they are forced to. Work, school, or to salvage "once in a lifetime" pictures you screwed up are a few examples. For me it was the latter. I find the tutorials within the application itself are pretty helpful. Practice makes perfect.

As for which camera: For point and shoot I highly recommend a Canon. The overall consistency in performance and quality across their entire lineup is pretty good. The SD series is their most compact and a great camera as someone else mentioned and could suite your needs. If you need something with manual settings then the A, G, or S, models might be the ones for you.

If you're wanting a dSLR then you can't go wrong with either a Nikon or Canon. If you will be shooting in lowlight environment with no flash and require high ISO then the advantage goes to the Canon dSLR's. Get a decent body and invest in good quality glass (lenses).

Thanks Ling. I only wish my PS (and photography) skills were as good as yours. Someone, quick give me a reason for me to be forced to learn PS.

Here's one of the best digital camera review site:

Digital Camera Reviews and News: Digital Photography Review: Forums, Glossary, FAQ

I was a Nikon user but switched to Canon when I went digital. In the DSLR market, you can't go wrong with either Nikon or Canon.

If you decide to go for low-end digital cameras, consider this: if you already own a cellphone with camera capability, then you'll end up with two gadgets that take mediocre quality pictures, and you'll end up hauling two items that essentially yield the same result.

yah i had a nikon awhile back, it took great pictures, but now i'm looking at the canons. I do have cellphone with a camera, it's actually the one that swivels, samsung A970, but i'm even looking to upgrade that lol. so I dunno..

A swiveling cell phone with a camera? No way!

All I'm stuck with is a camera phone and a rotating wrist.

What I've learned in Photoshop is attributed to how many times I've screwed up while trying to learn this hobby they call photography. Without mistakes I would still be clueless like I was 2 years ago. Still got a looooong ways to go.

Just go out and shoot random things. Look at pictures that make you go "Wow, how did they do that?". Try to re-create it. Whatever it takes to stimulate your brain. There has always been that "one thing" that got everyone motivated to take up photography. It's just a matter of finding out what'll do that in your case.

Chill-babe, whatever you decide to get, go to a store and handle it before you buy. The 'feel' will have a lot to do with your enjoyment and consequently your results.
yes that's a good idea FTL
