Anyone ever get their cellphone unlocked?

I'm going to be traveling through Europe for a couple months and was wondering how to handle the cell phone situation. I have a Nokia tri-band GSM phone through Cingular, so I know the phone would work in Europe but I'd have to pay a ridiculous amount of money in roaming to use it while still under Cingular.

I read that you can rent a cell phone while in Europe for two months with a European number for about $250, plus whatever you spent on airtime. Or, you can buy an unlocked cell phone (from eBay or something) and European SIM card from an online vendor (or a European airport) and just pay the cost of those two items along with airtime.

First, has anyone ever done anything like this?

Second, has anyone ever tried getting their regular cellphone unlocked for any reason. I'm sure the local Cingular store wouldn't do it, but maybe there is another way?

I had a phone locked on me and contacted the Siemens distributor for the phones and after I gave him the individual identification number (IMEI number) off of the phone he emailed me the code to unlock the phone. Seems as the phone maker does have these master numbers to unlock these things

Pay as you go cell phones are pretty common in Europe, sim cards can be recharged easily. Before I bought one on ebay that may or may not work, I would buy one there. Be advised, long distance back to the US will cost you. There are some low cost long distance plans you can get off the internet where you call a local number and are transferred back to the US.

What country are you going to be in first?

When I saw Robert's post I looked around for those services and found this one pretty cheap

https://www.unlocks.co.uk/order.php

However, I figured I'd better check and see exactly what Nokia meant by tri-band, and I found this

Tri-band GSM 850/1800/1900 MHz

I read that in Europe you need 900 and 1800 MHz. I guess my phone isn't a good thing to take. The same article said that they use 1900 in the states, so what's the point in having 850 MHz? Anyway...

GP2GP, I will be spending the majority of my time in Belgium.

i've had two phones unlocked. how it's done depends on the model. some are more
resistant than others. some are software unlockable and others are done using
hardware or more dedicated electronics.

most recently i had a V600 done by local university student who invested in a
motorola unlocker which she picked up on Ebay for about $300+. she charged
folks about $10 to unlock and had quite a line up of customers. took about 5 mins.

You can check but here when they normally say 850-950 and 1750-1950 this was a description of the GSM services in Jakarta. Jakarta GSM frequency ranges are the same here as they are in Europe. All based on the same GSM BTS's (cell sites) equipment that Siemens, Nokia and Ericsson install in Europe.
