I remember Vietnam well too. I'm 63 years old. Our imperialist, colonizing reasons for going into Nam were both illegal and immoral. We violated the 1648 Westphalian treaty that has governed international relations and protected national sovereignty for nearly 400 years; not to mention our violation of the Geneva Convention. But more important than the illegality of the war is the immorality of the war. Noone can justify the slaughter that was Vietnam with ?? Vietnamese dead and 57,000 U.S. soldiers dead and how many lives/families wounded and ruined? Nor can anyone morally justify what has been a bloodbath in Iraq for the last 3-4 years. The chickenhawk cowards who have ordered the deaths of 655,000 Iraqis and 3,000 U.S. soldiers are war criminals guilty of genocide. Period. Everyone of them deserves the same fate as that of Saddam Hussein.
The Vietnam war was a disaster in every way- reasons for getting into it and what we did after we got in. But first and foremost it was a disaster in terms of the cost of human suffering and life. "Cutting and running" (as you suggest) had nothing to do with the reason we left Vienam. We left with our asses on fire because we were flat-out defeated by the courageous, indomitable VC. In the U.S. we never have been able to admit that we lost. That's the reason we don't learn from our losses .... and lose again. The war against the people of Iraq was based upon lies; it is violating the same international laws, it is just as immoral as the 'Nam war, but perhaps even more stupid because it appears we didn't learn a goddamned thing since 1975. Bush's new strategy? He doesn't have any choice.
Eventually, the U.S. military will leave Iraq when the resistance pours into the Green Zone and kicks our asses out. The tragedy is that poor grunts looking for a college education or a way out of the slums will be the ones bleeding and not the assholes in Washington. Oh yeah - and one more thing - this isn't Bush's war - it's a war forced by the Neocons and Zionists in the so-called "Think Tanks" in Washington - Richard Perle, Douglas Feith, Paul Wolfowitz, David Frum, William Kristol, William Saffire, etc., etc - dual citizens of U.S. and Israel. They planned it for 25 years. Right now they are pushing for more cannon fodder to fight the war - not for oil - but for Israel. Next they want us to spill US blood for them on the sovereign people of Iran - who are no more a threat to the U.S. than Iraq was. That's the way I read it - and my opinion and $1.65 will buy you a coffee at Starbucks.
