"Countless"? Probably not as the number of research projects is countable so the numbers of bogus research projects must be equal to, or less than that. But who cares about accuracy when we wish to make a point, right?
So moving right along ....
Yes, fraud is present in science as in any other pursuit of mankind. It is more difficult to perpetrate fraud in science precisely because science deals with objective facts and facts are subject to checking. Do all perpetrators of scientific fraud get discovered? I rather doubt it. I'll bet most of the time when there is a discrepancy between one scientists results and some other scientists results, the idea of fraudulence never arises. Instead, it is assumed that sloppy technique or some stochasticity in the data or some poorly executed statistical technique was the cause. I'll bet that most of the time this is true. But sometimes it will be fraud.
Fraud on an individual scale is not too difficult to perpetrate. Anybody can write field or lab notes that are totally bogus. Or one can bias lab samples by spiking them (I have spiked samples to test a technician's methodology in using an ICP. Had I failed to track sample numbers, those spiked results would have entered the data stream -- would that be fraud or sloppy lab technique?).
Now getting more than one person to go along with fraud is far, far more difficult. Now we have a conspiracy and as Ben Franklin once said, 3 people can keep a secret only if 2 are dead. Your example of the Korean scientist is a great demonstration of that difficulty. (FYI, Korean science is very authoritarian when compared to science in the Americas and Europe. It is nearly unthinkable for a post-doc or R.A. or tech to question the PI about a project. That is not the research paradigm in the USA and other western countries where science is argued over endless cups of coffee or pizza and beer.)
To step that up a notch and infer that a whole discipline, climatology, is perpetrating a massive fraud that has somehow eluded auditors, peer reviewers, politicians and the popular press is right up there with 9/11 Conspiracy Theories. It requires a level of cooperation, deceit, and secrecy that is unknown in science, government or the press.
So if not a fraud, what could it be? Well, the simplest explanation is probably the best: either they are right or they are wrong. In either case it will all come out as more and better science is brought to bear on the problem.
