Car Shipping Recommendation

Hi everyone,

Wish all of you have awesome holidays.

Anyway, due to my career I will be relocating to St. Louis, MO from here in Bay Area San Francisco end of December.

All other things have been taken care of except my W140. I plan to ship it and have never done it before.

I need some input from you who have experience in shipping cars.

Thanks in advance.

I lived in the city of SF 1979-2004, so if I were going to St Louis I'd brace myself for major culture shock, so good luck!!!

I haven't shipped a car, but helped someone in Chicago buy a MB diesel on ebay near the SF airport. She had the car cheapest as possible, and this meant the car went on the top, front of an open car carrier (so it got the most grime and road filth possible on it, the least desirable spot on the car carrier), it took weeks longer, and the car actually went from SF to Baltimore, and then back to Chicago, a REAL long trip, (I hope the car had a good time) and it was an utterly filthy mess, so if you did it on the cheap this way and at this time of year, expect a similar result.....

I've heard both good and bad stories from DAS (Dependable Auto Shippers) the one advertised for ebay users.

I think it was that outfit used by a guy on Mercedesshop who'd bought a 'W111 coupe in San Francisco and had it shipped to New Hampshire. His experience was great, he could track the car's progress on line, daily, as it travelled, (that's cool) and it arrived fine, in less than a week cross country, door to door, so you can't beat that.

For a W140, I'd probably try for an enclosed trailer type shipment, and make sure insurance and bill of lading was in order.

Try and find a reputable shipper who is careful and prompt. I wish I could name such an outfit, and there probably are some out there, but I don't know which ones to suggest (and to avoid)

I hope it has nothing to do with your chill_babe obsession, as opposed that certain lady from Alabama...

Q. why the fuck am I checking BW posts on Christmas Eve?

A. I've got wanker of a family friend visiting us as per annual tradition and I need to get away from them for 5 minutes...

I'd move to St. Louis for babe too! Even w/out a Nordstrom. Can't beileve they don't have one. It is really a great city! Once you get to know the place I'll bet you like it as well as SF! We have a huge Nordstrom here in Kansas City if you really need a good shoe shine. It's not that far...

Well Shipping your car is going to depend on several things. With the first one being yes you guessed it right! money!$$$$. How much is your baby worth to you? and just how much will you spend to make sure it gets the care you feel it deserves?.

I Just shipped 3 cars from NY to UT - 96 Landrover D90, 2000 MB slk and 31 Packard.
the Rover and Benz went (sorry guys) open carrier. The Packard went full enclosed carrier. It was $3000.00 for the Rover and Benz on the open carrier it was $4500.00 for the Packard on the enclosed carrier.
Things you must do before shipping it.
make sure your insurance will cover it. (most do not) buy it if not.
Make sure the carrier is registered (best way to go is contact a moving company) like the same one moving all your other junk.
Passport Transport is a Top of the line auto shipper your car will be delivered just as clean as it was when you loaded it.
An open Carrier it will be dirty as crap and and everything else that flys up from the passing wheels does hit it.

Yes it was $1500 each I used United Movers simply because of the fact they cover everything.

The girls in this photo have just opened a new car delivery service. For $1,500 they will tow your car on a uhaul dolly behind their RV. They stop at rest areas and make extra money, which they will split with you. I can't tell you how, but it does generate a lot of cash.

Isn't Schmidt Motor Cars in StL? I would go there every weekend and drool over the cars.

Those prices seem way out of line to me. Glosure Motors in Denver said they would ship a new S550 to me for $350/open and $650/closed!

Why don't you drive? I drove from Los Angeles to New York. It was superb. The 2 ounces of Humboldt made for a smooth trip.
