The study's key result: When the consortium tried to simulate a recount of all uncounted ballots statewide using six different standards for what constituted a vote, under each scenario they found enough new votes to have narrowly given the Florida election--and by extension the presidency--to Al Gore. Under three models that attempted to duplicate the various partial recounts that were asked for by Gore or ordered by the Florida Supreme Court, however, Bush maintained a slight margin of victory.

Coverage of these remarkable results by the eight consortium members, as well as by other major news outlets reporting their work, was remarkably uniform. Findings were interpreted and framed to support and justify the political status quo, reflecting a post=September 11 media tendency to reassures a panicked public that the American system is still intact.

Let me guess, if someone breaks into your benz you go down to the local grocery store and hold it hostage for retribution.

I have noted before that Hillary is universally not electable for the POTUS. She is, however, a personality that Republican freaks fixate on, and that should be used by the Democrats to provide an advantage. She will attract the greatest number of "Swiftboat" type responses, and the Democrats should encourage the Republicans to spend their money on that tactic until she is set aside at the Convention for Gore, or someone else that moves in and shows sufficient leadership. The unjust character assasination efforts by the Republicans aimed at Hillary should be exposed and used to justify how untrustworthy they still are.

But, FTL, Hillary is not electable. Don't kid yourself. She should realize she was born 50 years too early, and has a record of polarization that is likely no fault of her own. That doesn't make it any less real though. Also, as someone has mentioned, more than half the women in the US won't vote for a woman, so she won't get the woman vote. Gore will. Obama can be the VP, as long as he doesn't have a bunch of racially polarizing skeletons in his closet. Dems need to rummage around in there like he was the enemy for a while to make damned sure he is squeaky clean.

But crux of the issue is what the Dems do for the next 12 months. If they do nothing but politics as usual (which is something they appear to be off to a good start to accomplish) they will convince the voters there is no clear choice. And it will go back to bullshit campaign manipulation schemes started by Rove.

And the source you quote made no mention, whatsoever, of the over 10,000 military votes that were illegally cast aside, of which an estimated 8 out of 10 votes for Bush. Toss those 10,000 back in the ring and Gore would not have had a prayer, no matter what standard they chose to use. You can chop it, slice it and dice it all you want. The ballots WERE mishandled, which tainted every recount from that point forward. When no set standard was in place and applied to recount the ballots, then any such 'recounts' are supposition, at best. Of course you can continue to change your standard until you get the result you like and that was exactly what Gore tried to do.

BTW, what a choice we had! If the Dems had run a better candidate than Gore, he would have beat Bush.

Show me where they were excluded. Just because mention wasn't made of specific votes doesn't mean they weren't included. Why don't you break it down and show how Bush would have won? I suspect his campaign already knew he wouldn't win if all the votes got properly counted, so they went whining to the Supreme Court.

Bush's campaign was one of the worst I an recall, short of the 2004 campaign. Bush knew he couldn't compete with McCain on an even field. Once I saw what he did to McCain, I knew what sort of administration this would be.

If the requirements are former Governor and looks "Presidential", then this guy might have a chance if Billary gets the nod. McCain is still popular in most parts. Not too right wing, Veteran, knows how to chill out for long periods under pressure. Any of these people might get the nod.

That's a good point, the Swiftboat types will stop at nothing to smear any candidate and try to redirect the issues....they should NOT be underestimated.
They are still out there.

There seems to be a level of sheer hatred of Hillary by enough people that would make her very unelectable. I don't know where it comes from to be so intense, but it is out there.

Simple fear. Fear of strong women. Fear of competing on the same level with women. I will vote for Hillary over any of the Repug lineup; I used to like McCain, but he has shown his colors over the last two years. Guiliani is a poser. Romney does nothing for me, but I don't know anything about him. The R primary promises to be interesting.
