America, where war is concerned, always has two choices: engage in total war, or don't fight. Either fight as a united country for total victory no matter what it takes, or don't fight. Unfortunately, we have had the first war in our history waged by a political party instead of by the United States. We should call this "The Republican War". America needs to withdraw from Iraq, and then the Bush/Cheney regime needs to be impeached, for the simple reason we now have leaders that do not even have the support of their own party anymore due to the unprecented unfolding disaster in Iraq. We need to step back and decide what we, as a united country (instead of as the frightened sheep we have been who allowed ourselves to be conned by these neo-con fanatics), are able to do in this world. Our answers are not in the Middle East, which is headed for and has been headed for its ultimate fate, it is in America. If we had put the money and effort we had put into Iraq into getting off foreign oil, it would have been money much better spent, and nobody's kid would have had to die. Their problem is a looming Thirty Year's War, or better, the continuation of their 100 Years War which began in 1919, ours is the poorest, most inept, corrupt and morally bankrupt leadership we have ever had in the history of the United States - a president who is a fool, and Vice President who is a fascist fanatic. That is our real problem.
Professor, I doubt if negotiations would help at this point. These movements have become stateless entities - militias and guerilla movements, terrorist cells, all have been allowed to get out of control. In the end it will consume all these countries. Look at Somalia. That is their future. If we continue to be part of the oil equation, we will be sucked right down with them.
