A "sophisticated computer hacker" has broken into a restricted UCLA campus database containing personal information about current and some former students, faculty, and staff, the university confirmed in an e-mail to those affected.
The information stored on the affected database included names and Social Security numbers, dates of birth, home addresses and contact information for more than 800,000 people, according to a report that pegged this as the "probably the largest breach of computer security at an American university."
Norman Abrams, acting chancellor at UCLA, sent the following e-mail, warning that the hacker had already stolen some Social Security numbers:
