Shit is happening all the time.

Humane errate est, or something like this.

However, now the American Empire is the only place on the planet where people of all the backgrounds can live together in peace.

Not perfect, far from it. I am sure you and me could put up much better system

Not perfect. Just the best of the rest.

Sounds like an apt description of a Bush administration cabinet meeting.

Nearly elected still isn't elected is it? That says something for a State that elected Huey Long as Governor and US Senator. The man was about as close to a communist and dictator as you can get, and coincidentally a Democrap. Perfect candidate for those such as yourself, FTL, and Jimmy Smith.

The Kingfish:

There's a hundred thousand Frenchmen in New Orleans
In New Orleans there are Frenchmen everywhere
But your house could fall down
Your baby could drown
Wouldn't none of those Frenchmen care

Everybody gather 'round
Loosen up your suspenders
Hunker down on the ground
I'm a cracker
And you are too
But don't I take good care of you

Who built the highway to Baton Rouge?
Who put up the hospital and built you schools?
Who looks after shit-kickers like you?
The Kingfish do

Who gave a party at the Roosevelt Hotel?
And invited the whole north half of the state down there for free
The people in the city
Had their eyes bugging out
Cause everyone of you
Looked just like me

Kingfish, Kingfish
Everybody sing
Kingfish, Kingfish
Every man a king

Who took on the Standard Oil men
And whipped their ass
Just like he promised he'd do?
Ain't no Standard Oil men gonna run this state
Gonna be run by little folks like me and you

Kingfish, Kingfish
Friend of the working man
Kingfish, Kingfish
The Kingfish gonna save this land

Growing-up in N Louisiana, I heard lots of stories about Huey Long. Almost any story you hear is true, and some of them are extraordinary.

He did some things for thsi state that were wonderful.

1. He campaigned overtly for the black vote at a time when most southern politicians (Varner, Bilbo, etc) were getting themselves elected on overtly racist platforms. This served to legitimize political power and voting rights (in a very small way) for blacks in Louisiana well ahead of the voting rights laws of the 1960's. Huey Long also knew how to pander to a crowd and could race-bait when expedient. But mostly not.

2. Huey Long broke the oligarchic lock that a small number of wealthy families execrted on state politics and private business. He did this by using the awful duplicity demonstrated by the New Orleans business and government elites during and following the 1927 flood. he was able to clearly identify where the problems came from and that this group was not serving the people of Louisiana. Yes, he demagogued it, but it was essentially the truth.

3. Huey Long changed highway funding in Louisiana to serve all of the parishes, not just the Baton Rouge & New Orleans parishes. He built bridges around the state and in a state that is essentially comprised of a giant deltaic river distributary system, bridges are essential for cohesion. True, he weilded the poer of bridges and road construction to build friends and destroy enemeis, but the pattern had been broken from NOLA & BR to the whole state.

4. Huey Long developed and guaranteed free textbooks for all school children ijn the state whatever race, private, parochial and public. Yes, it vastly expanded political patronage with Huey as the primary beneficiary. But it also brought education to rural whites and to blacks for the first time, in most cases.

5. Huey Long broke the Rockefeller control of oil and gas in Louisiana. Huey Long supported the reverting of mineral rights to the surface owner after a certain number of years post-production. He also was instrumental in getting royalty payments to those who owned the land and minerals. True, he extorted millions from Rockefeller in the process.

And there is much more. Much, much more.
