Why, Bitnst is going to do this for them. In other words, even tho millions of Iraqis support Baathism, they don't get a vote. This is not their democracy, after all, is it? Like Ricks points out in his book: this was the fundamental mistake, the one that made us hypocrites and liars to the Iraqi people. One third of them have no democracy at all. If that was true here, I'd get a fucking gun too - which is just what they did. Believe it or not, we had a lot of sympathy from the Iraqi people once we toppled Hussien. In return, we barred them from participation in the political process, we disbanded their government and army and left them to starve without pay or hope. What a fucking disaster. We could have allowed the formation of a Baathist Party and simply seen to it that the bad actors were put in jail, like we should be doing here with the US Republican Party. I see no difference between the two organizations - they are both riddled with political fanatics and killers.
The only thing we should have done, and if we had did it we would have won, is to guarantee the rule of law instead of the rule of men, the fundamental requirment of a democratic state. But of course, the fucking Republicans are against that in America so why should anyone expect them to do it in Iraq? We got involved in their Party Politics at the behest of our oil companies instead of acting as a fair referee to all political viewpoints in the region. What threat was the Baath Party of Iraq to America? What idealogy do they espouse that makes them a threat to humanity? Now ask yourself the same question of the current ruling party in Iraq: "The Supreme Council For Islamic Revolution in Iraq". Yeah. Those are the guys we should support, the ones who chant "Death to America" and call us Satan. Our real pals.
Recall that earlier generations faced down fascism and communism not just with missiles and tanks, but with sturdy alliances and enduring convictions. They understood that our power alone cannot protect us, nor does it entitle us to do as we please. Instead, they knew that our power grows through its prudent use; our security emanates from the justness of our cause, the force of our example, the tempering qualities of humility and restraint.
