This concept has in the past fomented me to consider starting a religion of my own. What has always put me off is thought of a bunch of whining sheep constantly tugging at my sleeve. Have you seen 'Life of Brian' ? If it were up to me it would be a compulsory part of junior education.

You don't need religion to believe...or maybe so....it becomes mythology and everybody loves a good story...

Believe what?

Then that would come under the heading of "religion", so you would certainly need "religion".

If you want to look forward to something that you do not and cannot know, that is certainly your prerogative. Personally, I find it unsatisfying and unproductive.

Hey, I'm no dreamer and any of the myths surrounding afterlife and 10 commandments are not what I am talking about, but it's simply hard for me to conceive of humanity being the captain of the boat. Still, I don't need a church to contemplate any of this...

What qualifies anything or anyone as "captain", other than one's own ego?

We are left with the echo of captaincy, a moral structure (in decay) that originated somewhere. The arguement often is that all things are simply the work of ego, I don't agree. Descartes was a bit of a bonehead (IMO) and so was Hegel, before them Aristotle/Socrates, (the King of the Arguement) etc... but what was the spark behind our moralityand even mythology?

Morality is entirely subjective -- there is no morality in nature, only behavior that promotes our survival and capacity to reproduce. Our morality is exactly that, no more and no less. It appears more complex than that of other creatures, because our social existence is somewhat more complex.
