If you look at the side mirrors of the car in your lane ahead of you and you can see the driver in them, do not dawdle as you pass because they will NOT see you as you draw alongside! This driver is using his side mirrors to confirm what he has already learned from his interior rear view mirror. This can be an amusing road trip game until you get tired of almost NEVER encountering a car with its mirrors properly adjusted.

If you have all three mirrors properly adjusted, you should be able to track a car that is overtaking you (I know, NO ONE overtakes your ass!)... any way, you can track the car with your interior rear view mirror. That mirror should 'hand off' the view to the side mirror on the side where the car is passing you. As the car passes from that mirror, you should be able to see the car itself at your side with peripheral vision or an eye shift to the side.

All of this can be accomplished without turning your head. When you are as lazy as I am, you make the car do the work for you.

If this is news to anyone reading this...try it. It's a whole new world of driving. One note of caution, though. Sunglasses with thick temples will block your vision and require you to turn your head slightly to make the system work properly.

Buy wraparounds. Oakleys work well.

Also, always remember the first rule of Italian driving.
"Che cosa è dietro voi non è importante."

Thank-you for that. I started a similar reply last night but got bored. As a biker, I have been aware of how few drivers have their side mirrors adjusted correctly for years. You should NOT be able to see the rear of your car in your side mirrors. The best way to set them up first time is to get a friend to stand behind the car in different positions so that you can achieve a panorama between your interior and exterior mirrors.

"DR: No wings and the glow is from radioactive isotopes...makes it handy because when I get up at night I don't need to turn on a light, the glow (albeit green) makes it easy to see. Combine it with the bluetooth headset flashing and I'm my own Christmas tree. It's just that sometimes even in OT I think it's permissible to give a serious response. "

My good friend, I applaud how you resist the temptation to be flippant in OT- I seldom have the willpower or the motivation required to make a useful contribution. Long may you maintain the patience!

Good advice BTW!
