Not too much need for it right now, for all intents and purposes, they are independent already.

They "declared" independence, the Turks from the West and the Iranians from the east would be all over them like bees on honey, to make sure the Turkish Kurds and Iranian Kurds didn't get any cute ideas about governing themselves.

They are doing fine in Iraq. one of their websites I saw yesterday are encouraging tourists from other parts of Iraq and the European and Arab states to visit them for a fine vacation!

The USA should let them alone, and not promise help and then renege as we did in 1975 and 1991 on our promises to help them.

I think they would probably agree to becoming a state of the United States. I'm all for it.

Recall that earlier generations faced down fascism and communism not just with missiles and tanks, but with sturdy alliances and enduring convictions. They understood that our power alone cannot protect us, nor does it entitle us to do as we please. Instead, they knew that our power grows through its prudent use; our security emanates from the justness of our cause, the force of our example, the tempering qualities of humility and restraint.

turkey will not be part of EU until they take care of the cyprus issue and a few things related to the kurds in turkey..

as ftl pointed out.. this would be the best time for the iraqi kurd to break off.. they basically are already doing that anyway.. what could we really do about it? not much.. i really don't think they want to get stuck with the sunnis either. it would also parhaps help us with throwing a wrench into irans long term plans.. short ones for sure. turks would be the major problem but i doubt they'd attack us.

Only because they are proven inept at fighting conventional wars. They have some factions that would love to see the rest of the world bend to the will of Allah

How the rest of the world elects to respond to that challenge will be closely watched. You won't get too far if you go around drawing Danish cartoons about them, though. They're a dour lot, no sense of humour at all.

They believe "Jesus is not the son of God. Jesus is a prophet of Allah."

Others see the threat and respond to it; some for having recently emerged from under another despotic force, others having not yet forgotten the lessons of a previous generation.

I agree.

The West is weak. Not in strength of arms, but much more importantly, where it matters - ideologically. Political Correctness has rotted our sense of right and wrong from within; moral equivalence is de rigour when faced with outright evil. Free speech is all but dead. The main occupation of the ever growing number of state employees is victim-farming. Excusing criminality and fanaticism, enabling dependancy, makes good money. Witch-finding PC commisars abound. We have lost our way and are ripe for conquest (Europe certainly is). Secular liberal democracy is a means to an end, not the end in itself - and in Europe at least, this 'liberal' welfare socialism is buckling. I predict balkanisation and civil war in Europe within two decades.

The Jihadis, like Bin Laden, believe that all they need is the right catalyst. Before 9/11 Bin Laden was training up to 5,000 men a year to become insurgents and terrorists. He had almost a dozen years to train them and disperse them. They have been busy little jihadis recruiting and training. They are far from stupid--they offer free education and healthcare to desperately poor. The do not force anybody into becoming soldiers of god. They encourage missionary schools in the west. They recruit and train. All before 9/11.

They are not stupid and they are not without resources and goodness knows, they have millions of potential recruits that lack only airfare and a gun to do their duty.

While we dick around with Republicratic politics and domestic power games those bastards set about world conquest and dickheads laugh.

Laugh at the next hijacked merchant ship loaded with fertilizer or barge string hijacked down the Mississippi River. Go X-ray that.

I drive a politically correct Ford Escort. I only put Venezuelan gas in my SL.
