So far the weirdest place has been southern Kentucky around I-75, near the Tennessee border. There are only two radio stations there - on FM you get gospel, on AM you get bluegrass. It tooks us a little while to realize the bluegrass (best I ever heard by the way) was live. The locals just go down to the broadcast station and start pickin'! The people there are right out of Mayberry RFD. Very low population, very rural, very poor
West Virgina is a beautiful state. I expected a strip mine pit. There is some of that, but for the most part it is misty mountains and nice little villages. People are dumber than a box of rocks.
Recall that earlier generations faced down fascism and communism not just with missiles and tanks, but with sturdy alliances and enduring convictions. They understood that our power alone cannot protect us, nor does it entitle us to do as we please. Instead, they knew that our power grows through its prudent use; our security emanates from the justness of our cause, the force of our example, the tempering qualities of humility and restraint.
