We treat black people worse, get over it and demand true equality across the board. If you want to put this in a context that includes the Middle East then we need to treat the Palestinians equal to the Jews to start seeing a glimmer of hope for peace. Is that too hard to do?

Jimmy Carter consistently voted against any policy that would/could benefit the Jews.

And who can take Jimmy Carter seriously when it comes to foreign policy? No one needs to look any further than his pacifist administration's record to know what he thinks we should do for peace.

Abstract (Document Summary)

What a warped sense of history, past and present; what a blatant abuse of our sensibilities. I look at the cover - as I did on a recent visit to the US - and ask myself, would it not have been far more appropriate had [Jimmy Carter], instead of superimposing his own humble presence over the wall, superimposed a replica of the hundreds of memorial plaques that dot Israeli bus stops, restaurants, supermarkets, malls and synagogues where Palestinian suicide bombers carried out their acts of murder?

We are not talking about one country, Israel, where citizens are denied basic rights, but of one country, Israel, with rights for all its citizens, and one aspiring Palestinian nation, trying to cast off the yoke of Israeli occupation by means so brutal that they defy the human imagination (an aspiring nation that has so far displayed no semblance of human rights or democracy). This is not apartheid.

Carter dares to accuse Israel of ethnic cleansing by constructing a barrier - in some places a wall - to protect its citizens from such madness! Despite Carter's perfunctory statements about Arab intransigence and terrorist tactics, for him the blame for the present conflict between Israelis and the Palestinians lies almost exclusively with Israel.

I will take a pacifist any day. Ask yourself where are we today because we have a warmonger in the White House?

Lessons from a cold peace

Abstract (Document Summary)

These hostile sentiments express themselves in many ways, including a popular song titled "I Hate Israel," venomously anti- Semitic political cartoons, bizarre conspiracy theories, and terrorist attacks against visiting Israelis. Egypt's leading democracy movement, Kifaya, recently launched an initiative to collect a million signatures on a petition demanding the annulment of the March 1979 Egypt-Israel peace treaty.

THIS LONG, ugly record of hostility exists despite a peace treaty with Israel, hailed at the time by both Egypt's president Anwar Sadat and Israel's prime minister Menachem Begin as an "historic turning point." US president Jimmy Carter hoped it would begin a new era when "violence no longer dominates the Middle East." I too shared in this enthusiasm.

Second, it spurred anti-Zionism. I lived for nearly three years in Egypt in the 1970s, before Sadat's dramatic trip to Jerusalem in late 1977, and I recall the relatively low interest in Israel at that time. Israel was plastered all over the news but it hardly figured in conversations. Egyptians seemed happy to delegate this issue to their government. Only after the treaty, which many Egyptians saw as a betrayal, did they themselves take direct interest. The result was the emergence of a more personal, intense, and bitter form of anti-Zionism.
