is it really this way in the States now?
I have been trading emails with an American friend who lives in Iowa and who I once worked with here in Jakarta and below is a paragraph copied verbatim and not changed, is it realy like this now there in the Land of the Free, Home of the Brave?
We are living in central Iowa. Even here in the sticks, attitudes are the big change in America. People are more conservative, suspicious and fearful. Its not that everyone is walking around with a scowl on their face, but there is a "them versus us" feeling just below the surface and "them" is anyone or group that might be viewed as slightly off center from the mainstream. Its not a good time to be an immigrant or look like an immigrant. Perhaps the success of the Democrats in the last election signals a turning point. Hope so. As you might guess, we are not at all distressed about getting out of Dodge for a few years.
