Now that I've spent a little time here, I can associate most Avatars with the people they belong to (and even those who haven't got one). Granted, my hack job of an '81 SL owner's manual may not make a profound statement about me when I post in this forum but it saves time when I post in the 107 forum. So, for me, I chose practicality over personality. Sue me.
I thought Von Vorschlag's "Dutch Master" suited him well as it had a leering 'sauciness' that matched his style but now he has a new one that is too small for me to determine what it is. I don't 'get it' but I imagine he doesn't care.
yoseyman has that provocative phallic finger and the dangling brass balls. Bold, indeed!
I'll take a moment here to say that the avatars of Ron (GermanStar), Teutone and ThrillKill are superb choices as I am sure any of their past or future avatars would be likewise.
Unfortunately for nutz4benz, my lips are beginning to tire from pressing too closely to moderator ass so it must be noted here that when reading posts, his new, animated "Angry simian" appears, in my peripheral vision, to be in a constant state of self gratification but can't quite reach fulfillment (thereby accounting for his anger?).
Jillian's "Kalishnikitty" must have Sanrio execs apoplectic!
The one that puzzles me most, however, is Shane's "Got Democracy?". As Shane uses it, it is a stand alone statement. Without doing a little Googling, one would not be aware of its origin or purpose and so would be left to decipher its secret meaning based soley on the image. We all recognize the Abu Ghraib figure in the foreground but...! Is Shane secretly right wing? It could be so argued, based on the American flag that provides the avatar's backdrop.
We are familiar with the flag in its normal position with the blue field in the upper left as seen by the viewer. When hung as a banner, the U.S. Flag Code states that the blue field is STILL to be in the upper left. This is opposite of the flag in the image. If the intent of the message was to signal distress or emergency, the flag should be upside down.
There are only two instances where it is proper to have the field on the viewer's right.
1. On the right side of an airplane or other vehicle so the flag would appear to be flying in the correct direction based on the motion of the vehicle. Since there is no vehicle, moving or otherwise, it can be concluded that this instance would not be applicable.
2. On the RIGHT shoulder of a uniform or other piece of clothing. This arrangement places the blue field closest to the wearer's heart.
QED...the only logical reason for the right side blue field in Shane's avatar is to demonstrate what is closest to his heart, the Right.
Of course, I could be totally full of crap.
Cliffs Notes
Avatars can be interesting and mean many things.
Flags have rules.
Shane might be a closet right winger.
Dig is FOS!
mines of my benz, and it represents me on a character level. everyone in my town knows it as Ben's Benz. It separates me form other dudes my age because its not new, not a convertable, and not bought by daddy. IVe been told i even look like it in a way.

No need to kiss my ass I'm just one of the guys, swatting spam and nuking SELLC at every chance. I swap avatars frequently for the record. Makes me wishywashy,no?
