Venezuela Election

The Election in Venezuela is next week and Chavez is running against two or three opponents. Do you think Chavez will be re-elected? Or will he loose and finally a new democratic Venezuela will rise.

Hmmm. What do YOU think? You're so close to Venezuela you can almost see it from the ABC Islands....better than anyone else around here. ( NBI vacationed on a cruise to the ABC Is. a few years ago, and saw a MINT new W210 bordeaux red sedan TAXI with the full Lorinser body kit and wheels on it, what was that thing doing trolling for fares down there???

He's the jefe now but he barely squeaked by, in the last election, the opposition was FURIOUS to him. I'd bet his opponents would love to have another go at him.

He had no overwhelming mandate when he got elected, that's for sure. Do you think his support has solidified since the election? He seems to have staked out an anti-USA posture, but seems savvy enough not to disrupt his oil dealings with the USA. Plus, a large number of Venezuelans still are quite poor.

Given the polls I have read, he should be reelected by a comfortable margin.

Recall that earlier generations faced down fascism and communism not just with missiles and tanks, but with sturdy alliances and enduring convictions. They understood that our power alone cannot protect us, nor does it entitle us to do as we please. Instead, they knew that our power grows through its prudent use; our security emanates from the justness of our cause, the force of our example, the tempering qualities of humility and restraint.

It's a real simple political atmosphere in Venezuela. Vote for Chavez, and live. OR, vote for another, and die.

Funny, I saw several hundred thousand anti-Chavez people in the streets the other day on CNN. Looked like opposition was doing OK to me.

In 2003 the US supported a coup to oust the legally elected Chavez. One would think the biggest thing the voters have to fear is the results of their election being overturned by us, not Chavez.

What I think I would fear would be a situation like existed after the recent election in Mexico this year where the election result was about 50% for each candidate, and not a seemingly clear, verifiable win for either side, with the result that each candidate claims victory, and the ostensible loser, Obredor, refuses to concede and tries to form a parallel government. Mexico is in a VERY precarious position, that the USA had nothing much to do with, right now. Oaxaca City, edo. de Oaxaca, is in flames as we speak.

Jim

Heck, we came damned close to that situation in 2000 right here in Florida, USA!
In fact some people even still think George Nush's side stole that election.

Most Americans do not realize what a powderkeg Mexico is. If we stopped letting them in, it would blow down there. We also are removing a huge amount of the electorate from them that are the poorest of the poor, who would probably vote leftist if they were still there. All this illegal immigrant bashing, be careful what you ask for. The Mexican Revolution at the turn of the century claimed millions of people. The next one would take all of Latin America with it. We need to encourage settling things by election and support the outcome. Instead we try to determine the type of government they have for them. All far-left governments do some good in liberalizing these countries from the horrendorous effects of years of junta rule, and all far left governments eventually fall because they can only guarantee subsistence living levels. Some groups of people don't even have that, and a far-left phase is a boon to them. Sooner or later they are going to want the things in life that more traditional capitalism has to offer, as we saw in the fall of the Soviets, and now in the changes in Vietnam and China, and they will move to the right, finding the center of whatever their societal norms are, and become stable democracies. We need to not interfere.

Not exactly accurate.

We (USA) did not have an opinion about the coup until after it looked like the coup leaders had won, then we said we liked them.

Later, Chavez prevailed. Had we really thought it was important I have a feeling Sr Chavez would be pushing-up daisies.
