They already have it. Southern Iraq and its oil fields are in the hands of Iranian-supported militias. Kurdistan faces no real threats. You conservatives need to start facing up to the reality of Iraq. Bush's vision of victory is a stable, unified Iraqi state. Even he knows that isn't going to happen. The end result of this fiasco is that Iran will have both control of 60% of the world's oil and a nuclear weapon. They will also now have a proven method of destablizing regimes that guarantees we will not get involved - the use of suicide troops, IEDs, and sectarian violence to destabilize society followed by the formation of Shiite militias, or if they are dominant Sunni, Hamas style militias, that will lead to an Islamic Republican form of government. We have allowed them to develop a paradigm of warfare we have no defense against: endless insane death. Mark my words, this is coming to every country of the Middle East, and we are responsible. We lost.
Recall that earlier generations faced down fascism and communism not just with missiles and tanks, but with sturdy alliances and enduring convictions. They understood that our power alone cannot protect us, nor does it entitle us to do as we please. Instead, they knew that our power grows through its prudent use; our security emanates from the justness of our cause, the force of our example, the tempering qualities of humility and restraint.
-President Barack Obama, 1st Inaugural address
