I think it's over spending and the luxuries
My new $30 shoes look just as good as thier $120 pair (to me).

20.00 X 2080 = $41,600

There is a place for both clerks and techs. To try and compare is foolish and results in misguided conclusions.

You assume that "the poor" buy $120 pairs of shoes? A few do. Some get them as gifts. Some get them as their only present at birthday or Christmas. Why do some want fly shoes, I don't know. But I bet you will find that the number of "the poor" wearing $120 shoes is many fewer than you think.

On a Quality Analysis thought, however, "their" $120 shoes will, statistically outlast your $30.00 loss leader shoes by about 3:1. [That was in Sports Illustrated last Christmas] so you are really only up a bit. You also have less arch support and, my guess is your feet sweat more due to quality of materials.
