Also, an all volunteer military ensures the present commanders a better pool of candidates in which to train. I wonder what the point would be in drafting a yellow gut with no ambition to do anything but lay down when the going gets tough. We are assured a lower quality military with the draft since patriotism has a good many black eyes in today's society compared with the patriotism of WWII.

Your post is contradictory. The drafted armies of WWII are somehow both inferior and superior to the current volunteer armies?

Recall that earlier generations faced down fascism and communism not just with missiles and tanks, but with sturdy alliances and enduring convictions. They understood that our power alone cannot protect us, nor does it entitle us to do as we please. Instead, they knew that our power grows through its prudent use; our security emanates from the justness of our cause, the force of our example, the tempering qualities of humility and restraint.

Surely, you understand how our culture in regards to patriotism and military support differs today than from the WWII era. The military of WWII was allowed to win wars at any cost AND were supported for while they were viewed by the average american as a necessity to protect our freedoms. The military of today is viewed as 'evil' by a much larger portion of our citizenry, so, explain to me how it would be beneficial to draft those into the military who have an inborn hatred of it?

Yes.

With this comparison, as with most things in life, there is no simple explanation.

Ummm...in WWII we were both credibly threatened and definitively attacked. Iraq had/has done neither. D'ya think that might have something to do with it?

If you think large portions of the population view the military as "evil", you are a fool.

Draft armies destroyed the Confederacy, the German Empire, the Nazis, the Japanese and the fought the communists to a draw until they politically collapsed. The volunteer army has become an adjunct to the Republican Party, a political and propaganda tool that was just used to yellow ribbon our asses into the most disasterous war in US history. The idea that a democracy should have some elite Praetorian Guard is stupid and dangerous.

Quite the opposite, one can generally recognize truth by its beauty and simplicity.

This speaks to nothing other than than the basic nature of the conflicts we have chosen to engage in, i.e. genuine threat vs. contrived threat.

Then you are a religionist: you require no facts, logic, reason, or experience. All you need is the ability to divine truth.

An odd comment from one who claims to be a scientist. What you call a religionist, most call physicists. The concept I've laid on the table is pure, unadulterated scientific creed.

In general, the further one strays from simplicity, the further one strays from the truth. Perhaps a visit to the pulpit of Reverend Occam is in order.
