He pointed out that, unlike me, he had no accent.
Ha, I dare say he was exercising a little of the famous British irony when he made that comment, but these things do develop almost imperceptively. The result is often the bastard child of both forms and sounds most grating to the native speakers. It starts with the adoption of common words for ease of communication and then bleeds over into pronunciation. Madonna is a good example. I often hear Americans criticise her for a fake 'limey' accent, but we hardly notice it.

Having traveled over both the Pacific and Atlantic, I have not encountered many problems except for the times the workers were on strike (when are they not?) at the DaVinci airport in Rome -- trash piled to the ceiling, stayed away from certain areas around Madrid to avoid the gypsies, & met the rudest waiter in the world in France.

In Guam the older locals were friendly, but it's the only place I've been where armed guards were required at McDonalds, & you couldn't get theft insurance for a motorcycle.

It's hard to blend into the crowd in places like Hong Kong or Tokyo, everybody seemed to be a least a foot shorter than me.

Always be polite, try to observe the local customs as much as you can, and make every effort to start the conversation in their language. They will figure out real quick your an American and usually will speak back to you in english. If your an ass, then you get what you deserve.

In no way is America the most unfriendly Country to visit. With America the fourth Continent I live on, I have long since come to the conclusion that no Country has exclusive rights to idiots and obnoxious louts. Many vacationers seem to undergo a Jekill & Hyde like personality change when away from home. I have felt embarrassed by the behavior of some of my Germans compatriots in quite a few Countries. If you have ever been to, say Arenal on the Spanish Island of Mallorca, you'll be surrounded by loud Germans. BTW, Arenal boasts to have the longest bar in Europe. When I visit Germany and make a remark/talk to a stranger, I get looks as if I am an alien from another Planet.

The ethno-centric areas on Mallorca where Brits, Germans, and Scandanavians gather are as much "Mallorcan" as Cancun or Cabo San Luis are part of Mexico.

(My high school girlfriend's parents dropped out of US life and moved there in 1984. I spent the summer of 87 or 88 there. Holy crap that was almost 20 years ago. What the fuck do I know about the place today? LOL.)

As far as "ugly Americans" are concerned, I have met idiots and wonderful people of all stripes throughout the world.

Sounds like you are spending too much time on the beaten path.

The first time I was on Mallorca was 35 years ago. An old friend (since kindergarten) has his business in the North in Alcudia, and lives on a finca near Pollenca. Another old pal lives nearby in Cala Ratjada. I have always liked the Island, but not at the hight of the tourist season. Mallorca is known among painters for its 'light'. The Joan Miro museum in Cala Mayor (just a few km SW of Palma) is build on the grounds of the painters studio. It's a great place to visit, but smaller than the Barcelona Miro.
