Doing something useful

Well, if it keeps them out of mischief, like developing cluster bombs or shelling their neighbours, I suppose it's worthwhile. Stupid barstards.

From The Times 18/11/06

The lab that helps Jews to observe rules dating back 3,500 years
From Ian MacKinnon in Jerusalem

WITH its disappearing ink and cunning electronic gadgets it could be straight out of a James Bond story.

But this laboratory, where grey-bearded engineers invent fiendish devices and test machinery, grapples with altogether trickier problems than keeping secret agents ahead of the game. The 40-year-old institute, in a scruffy block on the fringes of Jerusalem, conjures up solutions that allow observant Jews to meet the challenges of modern life without violating the Sabbath laws.

Jewish law — or Halacha — handed down in the Torah 3,500 years ago, dictates the actions of the religious between sunset on Friday and sunset on Saturday, the day of rest and prayer. But Rabbi Levi Yitzhak Halperin has spent half a lifetime finding ways to enable Orthodox Jews to contend with the demands of urban living.

“We give advice on what a Torah life is in our technology-rich society,” said Rabbi Halperin, 73, director of the Institute for Science and Halacha. “This highlights that the Torah is a living Torah that is for ever applicable.”

Much of the work focuses on the Sabbath prohibition against lighting a fire or doing work. Orthodox Jews translate this as a ban on switching on an electric bulb or completing a circuit, so preventing telephones being answered, cookers being switched on, cars being driven or lifts in flat blocks being summoned or instructed to stop at the appropriate floor.

Some solutions are simple. Lifts that stop at every floor on the Sabbath are commonplace. The Sabbath light is a metal box over a fluorescent light, switched on before sunset on Friday. The box is removed and replaced as required. A Sabbath telephone was developed that allows the numbers to be keyed without completing the electrical circuit. How could doctors who must attend their duties on the Sabbath keep records, classed as working by the Torah? The institute’s answer was an ink that disappeared after 72 hours, enabling photocopying the following day, but not proscribed by the Torah because it is not permanent.

The institute fields inquiries from the 20 per cent of Israeli Jews who consider themselves observant and others around the world. One of the more notable was from Ilan Ramon, the first Israeli astronaut, who perished when the space shuttle Columbia disintegrated in 2003. Before launch he asked when the Sabbath would fall in his craft orbiting Earth 16 times every 24 hours, with sunrise and sunset every 90 minutes.

Rabbi Halperin declared that the astronaut should observe the Sabbath at the time it would happen on the Florida launching pad.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly
With the Bible's various prophecies of the downfall of Babylon, one would think Christian eschatologists would have a field day with the war in Iraq. But apart from a few perfunctory prophetic exegeses-Jeremiah's "arrows of expert warriors" are laser-guided bombs, the "plunderers of the North" are looters at Iraq's National Museum, Isaiah's "chariot of men with horses" is an Abrams tank-this poorly organized, fundamentalist screed touts the Bible less as a crystal ball than as a rationale for a Wolfowitzian grand strategy against the Muslim world. On the temporal plane, Evans argues that the U. S. should use its control of Iraqi oil to break OPEC, and employ Iraq as a base ("only a short reach from the throat of Syria and Iran") for the war on terrorism. On the spiritual plane, because Islam is "a religion conceived in the pit of hell" and terrorism is orchestrated by demons, he advocates the use of Christian prayers summoning angelic intervention to root out the evils of terror and Islamic fanaticism. Evans, founder of the Jerusalem Prayer Team ministry and author of Why Christians Should Support Israel, is especially concerned with the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. He opposes Bush's "road map" initiative and insists that God apportioned the West Bank and Gaza to the Jews of the land of Israel, whose modern consolidation is a prerequisite for the Second Coming. Evans's one-sided account of Middle East conflicts, based on fancifully symbolic readings of obscure Bible passages, concedes virtually no legitimate grievances or non-demonically inspired motivations to Muslims and Palestinians. His book is a disturbing addition to the debate on these critical areas of U. S. foreign policy. Photos.

Recall that earlier generations faced down fascism and communism not just with missiles and tanks, but with sturdy alliances and enduring convictions. They understood that our power alone cannot protect us, nor does it entitle us to do as we please. Instead, they knew that our power grows through its prudent use; our security emanates from the justness of our cause, the force of our example, the tempering qualities of humility and restraint.

-President Barack Obama, 1st Inaugural address

You won't consider a man's opinion because of his appearance, all the while; you make serious comments degrading the Jewish State. You aren’t exactly “Doing something useful” either. (As you titled this topic)

^^^^^^

Is it intelligence or a sense of humour which you lack?

Actually, you may be wise not to answer that question.

Oh, I must be mistaken, this is about me? I thought this was an opportunity for you to display your anti-Semitic views?

You are presumptuous. I am an atheist and as such I abhor any circumstance where dogma and ritual hinder peace and pragmatism.
